Say Anything (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: Say Anything & The Front Bottoms (6/28/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph Say Anything on June 28, 2014.

On June 28, Say Anything took the stage to a sold-out theater in the heart of New York City. The band, who performed alongside The Front Bottoms, The So So Glos, and You Blew It!, have worked for over a decade to reach a point in their careers where their name can be proudly displayed on a marquee in one of the world’s busiest intersections.

The band is touring off their most recent record …

UTG PHOTOS: Hardcore Devo Tour (6/19/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph Devo on June 19, 2014.

Last Thursday, Devolutionaries from literally around the world gathered in New York City for the most exciting and bizarre performance I’ve ever seen in Times Square.

“Nixon to address nation tonight at 8 as resignation rumors grow,” reads the headline on a newspaper Mark Mothersbaugh is holding when the curtains open. The room is black except for a single spotlight and immediately an entire room is transported back in time.

The New Wave innovators of electronic art took …

Goo Goo Dolls (Aud Lew Photography)

UTG PHOTOS: Goo Goo Dolls & Daughtry (6/14/14)

Under The Gun sent guest photographer, Audrey Lew, to the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, NY to photograph Goo Goo Dolls & Daughty on June 14, 2014.

Last week, the Goo Goo Dolls kicked off their summer tour with the support of Daughtry and the Plain White T’s.

The weather at Jones Beach was nice, but as expected got a bit nippy from the ocean breeze. Overall, I’d expected it to be a good show when it came to sound and performance, seeing as every band on the ballot has been around the block a few times. I …

Phil Anselmo & Zakk Wylde (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: Black Label Society & Down (5/10/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph The Revolver Golden Gods Tour on May 10, 2014.

Over 2,000 members of the BLS New York Chapter gathered Saturday night for a sold-out evening of metal music. The stacked lineup included Black Label Society, Down, Devil You Know and Butcher Babies.

It was satisfying seeing the proud display of heavy music in Times Square. Tourists passing by and looking at the sold-out marquee for the likes of Zakk Wylde and Phil Anselmo is just as satisfying to watch as …

Iggy Azalea (Laura Murray Photography)

UTG PHOTOS: Iggy Azalea (5/5/14)

Under The Gun sent guest photographer, Laura Murray, to Irving Plaza in New York City to photograph Iggy Azalea on May 5, 2014.

Iggy Azaelia is on the path to next level pop stardom. Currently, she is featured on Ariana Grande’s single “Problem,” which is #1 on the iTunes song chart. The Australian native’s debut album The New Classic has had an outpouring of fan approval since its release on April 21. She’s unique and we at Under The Gun love that.

The first thing fans saw on stage when they entered Irving Plaza was a structure that somewhat resembled …

YG (D SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: YG’s ‘My Krazy Life’ Tour (4/27/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Irving Plaza in New York City to photograph YG & DJ Mustard on April 27, 2014.

Last week, I’m sure you saw UTG TV’s interview with YG & DJ Mustard. We conducted that interview earlier in the day before the guys took the stage and made the sold out Irving Plaza shake.

The show wasn’t a typical casual hip-hop show–it had a theatrical set and a constant level of energy. It was thoroughly entertaining and even featured appearances by The Lox and Chinx. As if seeing YG and Mustard throw it …

The Used (Aud Lew Photography)

UTG PHOTOS: Taking Back Sunday & The Used (4/21/14)

Under The Gun sent guest photographer, Audrey Lew, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph Taking Back Sunday & The Used on April 21, 2014.

Taking Back Sunday and The Used just wrapped up the end of their co-headlining tour in support of their new records Happiness Is and Imaginary Enemy, respectively. Joining them on the road were Sleepwave and Tonight Alive.

The diverse lineup brought out fans of all ages. After over a decade, Taking Back Sunday are still going strong. The band presented fans with a knock-out performance that included songs spanning their …

Chuck Ragan-2

UTG PHOTOS: Chuck Ragan & The White Buffalo (4/18/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Irving Plaza in New York City to photograph Chuck Ragan & The Camaraderie on April 18, 2014.

Last week, you may have seen UTG TV’s exclusive interview with The White Buffalo. Briefly after the interview, I was fortunate enough to shoot the most well-crafted musicians I’ve seen in a while.

The eclectic sound and instrumentation of Chuck Ragan‘s newest musical endeavor is unrivaled in today’s musical climate. His straightforward and authentic approach to songwriting isn’t overwhelmed by the enormous stand-up bass or violin performing next to him on stage. Ragan, who …

RiFF RaFF (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG EXPERIENCE: RiFF RaFF’s ‘Neon Icon’ Tour (4/21/14)

It’s almost midnight and RiFF RaFF just exited the stage at Irving Plaza. Blunt smoke is filling the green room as he finishes taking photos with VIP meet and greet winners. Just when he thought it was over, he’s approached by a group of people who didn’t exactly fit the expected demographic for one of his concerts.

“Ya’ll came in here looking like Duck Dynasty,” RiFF RaFF blurts out to the guests. One of them is wearing a NASCAR t-shirt.

What happened next was undeniably the most interesting thing I’ve seen in a while. Last weekend, I watched Chuck Ragan …

Jay Mohr

UTG INTERVIEW: Jay Mohr On Stand-Up, George Carlin, And His “Hotel California”

“If anyone thinks my show was ‘pretty good,’ then I’ve completely failed.”

It’s hard to edit down an interview when the person you’re talking to is an incredible interviewer himself. Not only did Jay Mohr devote time to our conversation, but he often turned the table, asking me my opinion on various issues.

Furthermore, it is impossible to define Mohr in a succinct way, given that he’s done so many different things so well. You may recognize him as a stand-up comedian or an actor. You may have seen him on Saturday Night Live or listen to his podcast Mohr

The Black Dahlia Murder (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: The Decibel Magazine Tour (4/11/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph The Decibel Magazine Tour on April 11, 2014.

In 2014, March Madness came in the form of decades of metal. The Decibel Magazine Tour spanned across 21 cities, traveling between Orlando and Seattle before wrapping up in the Northeast.

The tour featured metal legends Carcass, our friends in The Black Dahlia Murder, Canada’s Gorguts, and the youngsters in Noisem.

Check out below the jump to see some photos from the show. If you made it out to see any …

HIM (D SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: HIM & Anathema (3/16/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Irving Plaza in New York City to photograph HIM and Anathema on March 16, 2014.

On March 14 and 16, HIM and Anathema were able to draw some heavy duty crowds to New York’s Irving Plaza. The audience wasn’t a sea of 16-year-old screaming girls, which was a breath of fresh air compared to many of the shows I attend. That being said, I was overwhelmingly shocked at the level of noise that room was able to create through screaming and cheering alone.

Professional sound systems and acoustics were no match for …
