UTG LIST: The Best Releases You Might Have Missed From The First Half of 2014

If there’s one thing 2014 has brought us thus far it is an array of fantastic music. It seems as though every week there is a new record released that needs to be thrown into the consideration for album of the year. For our mid-year review at Under The Gun, we wanted to bring you a list of records that we feel contain some of the best material released so far this year. However, we decided to focus on those that you might not have had a chance to hear yet due to being the works of (currently) lesser-known acts.…

UTG List: 8 Songs We Want The Blood Brothers To Perform At Their FYF Fest Reunion

Today the members of The Blood Brothers made it known that their eight-year hiatus was finally coming to an end with the announcement that the group would be performing at FYF Fest in Los Angeles this August. We had no idea such a reveal was on the way, and when the news finally reached us, all work at UTG HQ came to a halt for at least five minutes. There were cheers, there were quick sing-a-longs to “Love Rhymes…,” and everyone immediately began calculating how much money would be needed to make the trek to California in just three short …

5 Movies That Mishandle Future Tech As Badly As ’Transcendence’

The future is both incredibly exciting and horribly terrifying at the same time. You never know what breakthroughs will be discovered from one day to the next, nor do you know who will be in control of said innovation once it has been found, and over the last several decades Hollywood has made many promising attempts to bring the idea of future tech and all its crazy possibilities to the big screen. Some work, like Looper or The Fifth Element, but others are so facepalm worthy that the sheer idea of revisiting them makes you want to slap yourself …

UTG LIST: The Essential Anti-Love Songs For Valentine’s Day

I have a friend; she loves Valentine’s Day. At the beginning of each year, she spends her days playfully trying to pinpoint just how her stupendously awesome boyfriend will woo her come February 14. She fawns over flowers, swoons over candy, and gets off on public, often cheesy displays of affection. She spends hours in front of the mirror, and her dinner reservations have been set for months. And don’t worry guys, social media will be provided with a play-by-play account of her and her man’s evening out.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my friend to death, but the …

UTG LIST: The Essential Love Songs For Valentine’s Day

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, and on top of all that, it is about as ambiguous as a feeling can get. Since the dawn of time, droves of individuals have tried to put this warm fuzzy feeling into words, and despite varying results, it would seem that everyone can agree on two things:

First, the moment you fall in love–like, REAL love–you will know, regardless of your age, outlook, or past. Don’t ask me how it works; you just will.

Second, and more importantly, regardless of your definition, it will be …

UTG’s 5 Artists To Watch In 2014

It’s that time of year again!

Since 2009, the UTG staff has set aside the first few days of the new year to discuss which bands we thought were destined to take their careers to another level in the months ahead. This discussion eventually became our now beloved ‘5 Artists to Watch’ feature, and in the years since that column’s initial debut we have had the pleasure of giving early exposure to some of music’s biggest acts. This year’s list was the toughest to create to date, but we finally settled on five acts we believe everyone will be talking …

UTG LIST: 5 VOD Picks For Friday The 13th

We don’t usually put a ‘th’ at the end of dates, but today we are making an exception.

Friday The 13th, whenever it falls, has a long history of being thought of in the same vein as black cats, slasher films, and other relatively general horror cliches. We’re all well aware of the fact Chritsmas is usually considered a time to share love and happiness with those that matter most, but here at UTG we decided to use this special opportunity to share 5 recent VOD releases perfect for making the most of Friday the 13th from the comfort of …

UTG List: The Best ‘Ugly Christmas Sweaters’ From Bands Available In 2013

I don’t know how much time you’ve spent plotting your holiday shopping just yet, but the must-have item in nearly every band store this season is the “ugly Christmas sweater.” Sometimes sold as a crew neck with a sweater design, these items offer a humorous twist on the classic Christmas sweater while giving artists a decent excuse to cash in on the holiday season through merchandising. We love them, as we know many of you do, and after seeing our social feeds flooded with designs from countless bands we decided to compile all our favorite ugly sweaters to ease your …

UTG LIST: 10 Essential Horror Films Directed By Women

Happy Halloween, everyone! This is by far our favorite holiday, and as part of this year’s celebration we’ve partnered with filmmaker Andrea Wolanin to bring you a list of 10 essential horror films directed by women.

Who is Andrea Wolanin? Good question! No seriously, it’s okay if you don’t know. Andrea is an aspiring feature filmmaker whose most recent short, M is for Mundane, is one of the top contenders to be included in The ABCs Of Death 2. We saw her short a few weeks back and instantly fell in love with her talent. After speaking with …

UTG LIST: Ten Songs To Remember Elliott Smith

Today marks the tenth anniversary of the death of famous singer/songwriter, Elliott Smith. In his short, but vastly influential career, Smith mastered the art of songwriting, creating beautiful piece after piece. In one of his most memorable candid statements, Smith claimed that he thought of songs as shapes, rather than pieces strung together. This aspect of looking at art has followed me since I first heard it, attributing this wave-like cyclical motion of music to the human experience. With his footprint solidified in the soil, I have never experienced music the same.

Together, here at UTG, we decided to compile …

UTG’s Essential Shark Week Playlist

The television phenomenon known as Shark Week has spilled into mainstream pop culture in recent years, and we thought it was only fitting that this week spent celebrating the awesomely ferocious beauty of nature have its own playlist.

With the exception of Shark Night 3D, it’s hard to find a time in recent memory when people were not completely in love with sharks. Ever since Jaws terrified audiences back in the 70s, studios have spent (and made) millions cashing in on the fandom surrounding one of our planet’s deadliest creatures, and it only takes a Twitter search of the …
