REVIEW: Half Hearted Hero – Whatever

Artist: Half Hearted Hero
Album: Whatever
Genre: Pop-Punk
Label: Animal Style Records

Massachusetts-based band Half Hearted Hero has been slowly making a name for themselves in the pop-punk genre over the past year or so. While I definitely recognized their name, I can honestly say I was not very familiar with their work. Lots of bands come out, and Half Hearted Hero is one of the bands that kind of fell through the cracks for me. Not that it’s because they’re not a band of quality, but just simply because I don’t have the time to check out every band …

REVIEW: Yellowcard – Southern Air

Artist: Yellowcard
Album: Southern Air
Genre: Pop-punk
Label: Hopeless Records

Yellowcard is one of the bands that I grew up listening to. And not just, “Oh I love that album Ocean Avenue,” or, “Yeah ‘Only One’ is so good!” No. That is not me at all. Yellowcard was one of those bands when I was younger that I completely obsessed over, poured over lyric sheets, deconstructed songs, and was the soundtrack to my childhood. They are such a part of me that people frankly don’t really understand. My friends within the hardcore scene poke fun and say things like …

UTG EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Yellowcard’s Ryan Mendez

Recently at Vans’ Warped Tour in Camden, NJ, I sat down with Ryan Mendez, guitar player of Yellowcard to talk about the tour, bands they are excited about, their new record Southern Air, and their Fall plans. It was an absolute pleasure speaking with the man, and it only got me more anxious to see what Yellowcard has in store for us in the coming months.

You can check out the interview in two different ways after the break (because I know some people rather read), either the actual audio from the interview, or the transcribed version.

LIVE REVIEW & PHOTOS: Less Than Jake, Ballyhoo!, Kill Lincoln

Kids love ska music. It’s just how it is. It’s fast, it’s loud, but at the same time is so easy to dance to. It’s really not that hard to digest, so really anyone can go to ska shows and have a great time. Don’t like the loud guitars? Here’s some trumpets for you. Don’t like the ska dancing? Here’s a fast break that you can mosh to. If you were or are a teenager with any sort of connection to the punk scene at all, you probably have listened to ska at one point in your life. And for …

REVIEW: Real Friends – Acoustic Songs EP

Artist: Real Friends
Album: Acoustic Songs EP
Genre: Pop-Punk/Acoustic
Label: Unsigned

Acoustic pop punk releases can be sketchy. There is a large chance of being cliché, annoying, and sounding absurdly whiney. It’s just how it goes, some bands should simply not do acoustic releases. Real Friends is not one of those bands. Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, pop-punk group Real Friends’ EP Everyone That Dragged You Here is a UTG staff favorite. With summer coming up, there is no doubt in our minds that it will continue to be on heavy rotation. But what are you to do when it’s late …

LIVE REVIEW + PHOTOS: La Dispute and the Wildlife Tour

Baltimore is a weird place to see shows for me. I live in DC without a car, so getting there is really hard without the help of great friend (A big thanks to my friend McKenzie who let my friends Christina, Luka and I borrow her car. You’re the best.). Some venues in the city are really awesome (Charm City Art Space), some are kinda bad (*Cough* Ram’s Head Live), and others it’s really hit or miss. I recently went to the Ottobar to see La Dispute on their Wildlife Tour, and I’ve had some problems with that venue in …
