HOLY SH!T: “Avengers” Becomes Fastest Film To Cross $400 Million Domestically, Crowned Disney’s Highest-Grossing Film

The good news continues to roll in for Marvel, Disney, Joss Whedon, and everyone else involved with The Avengers. As of this morning, the superhero epic became the fastest film to gross $400 million domestically after only 14 days of release. The previous record of 18 days was held by The Dark Knight.

That’s not all. On the worldwide market, Avengers has officially passed Toy Story 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest to become the #6 highest-grossing film of all time and the highest-grossing Disney release ever.

“Hunger Games” Earns $155 Million, Shatters Box Office Records

We all knew The Hunger Games would be big, but I do not think anyone could have predicted just how successful it would become.

In only three days (and some midnight showings), early estimates from Lionsgate report that The Hunger Games has earned an amazing $155 million domestically. The film, which is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins, now has the third-highest opening weekend ever, behind Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight. This marked a 52% drop in attendance over the previous weekend and brings the film’s domestic twelve-day total to $261 million, which makes it the year’s highest grossing film (overtaking The Hangover 2, which critics also hated).

Elsewhere on this weekend’s chart, Horrible Bosses bested expectations by raking in $28 million to open in second, …

“Cars 2″ wins at the box office, loses with audience

The box office results are in and it turns out, no one cares if you’re the lowest scoring Pixar film ever on RottenTomatoes because people couldn’t drive fast enough to Cars 2 this weekend. Taking in $68 million, the film surpassed the opening of the original, but failed in comparison to Toy Story 3‘s $110 million weekend last year.

Bringing in $31 to arrive in second (but also fail with critics), Bad Teacher proved people love raunch, regardless of how original it is. Expectations for the film were averaging $20 million, so this has become a relative …
