Any self-respecting film fan ought to be pretty darned familiar with Japanese cult classic Battle Royale, released way back when in 2001 (although it wasn’t officially released in the U.S. until 2011). Based on the novel by Koushun Takami, it tells the tale of a futuristic, totalitarian Japanese society which forces a group of schoolchildren to fight each other to the death on a remote island. Long mooted for a U.S. remake, it seems the film may now get its English-language makeover by way of TV.

The Avengers have finally been dethroned as Men In Black 3 takes the top spot at the box office this week. After nearly a month on top The Avengers drops to second place while the family friendly Will Smith movie, Men In Black 3 wins over American audiences despite luke-warm reviews. Battleship continues to sink, and newly released Chernobyl Diaries ends up somewhere in the middle of the charts where it belongs. You can see the full top ten list from the weekend and how much each movie made after the jump.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE RESULTS: May 18-20
Once again The Avengers can not be defeated. Marvel’s hit superhero movie tops the chart yet again, making more than the three new major releases made combined. Taking second place this week was Battleship, which has proved that a board game no one plays after they turn 14 is a bad subject for a movie. Battleship has quite the fight ahead if it hopes to at least break even, as it cost just north of 200 million to make. You can see the top ten list for the weekend and how much the movies made after the jump.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE RESULTS: (May 11-13)
Marvel’s The Avengers continues to reign supreme for the second weekend in a row, continuing to break all sorts of records. This weekend the superhero flick tops the box office numbers for a second weekend in a row, beating out Avatar for the record for best second weekend ticket sales. Dark Shadows opened at the number two slot, proving that people would rather see a superhero movie again than sit through yet another Tim Burton movie staring Johnny Depp with a creepy vibe. Surprisingly Girl In Progress grabbed a top ten spot this weekend, which is great for a movie …
DAMMIT: Miss Spoof Films? Don’t Worry, “The Starving Games” Are On The Way!
The talk of the Mayan calendar foretelling the end of the world has been disproven by countless scientists, but this morning’s movie news does affirm our belief that humanity is slipping ever closer to the edge of extinction.
Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the two guys who struck gold with Scary Movie over a decade ago before turning their (lack of) writing talents to parodying every genre and major feature they could craft a poop joke around, have announced they are beginning work on a parody film based off The Hunger Games entitled, The Starving Games. Peter Safran will …
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE RESULTS (April 27-29)
Hold the phone! Think Like A Man tops the box office for the second weekend in a row.
The Steve Harvey fueled romantic comedy made the most money yet again, edging out the newly released The Pirates! Band of Misfits by a few million dollars. The only other new release to make the top five list for weekend gross was The Five-Year Engagement, which stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. The other new releases were not far behind, Safe and The Raven took the number six and seven spots respectively. You can see the full top ten list and …
Francis Lawrence Signs On To Direct “Catching Fire”
The man who brought us I Am Legend and Water For Elephants, Director Francis Lawrence, has officially signed on to direct Catching Fire, the second film in The Hunger Games series.
Rolling Stone has the story, which claims Deadline noted Lionsgate had also considered Moneyball director Bennett Miller and Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona, but only Lawrence could work within a timetable that would allow the movie to hit theaters by the fall of next year.
Forgetting Water For Elephants momentarily (though it did look great), I think Lawrence could definitely capture the world of Catching Fire better …
IT’S OFFICIAL: Gary Ross Will Not Direct “Catching Fire”
The man who brought The Hunger Games to life has announced he will not be tackling the film’s sequel, Catching Fire.
Whether or not you enjoyed the recent adaptation of The Hunger Games, there is no denying the financial success of the film. As a result of that popularity, the studio is trying to keep a tight production schedule running on the sequel, Catching Fire, in hopes of hitting an even bigger jackpot in 2013, but that may now be in turmoil because director Gary Ross has confirmed he is leaving the project.
In a statement made …
Hunger Games Tops Box Office, Crosses $300 Million Domestically
Two titles many considered to be heavyweights entered cinemas this weekend, but neither was strong enough to take down the teen titan known as The Hunger Games.
Official numbers will not be released until tomorrow, but early estimates are reporting The Hunger Games took this weekend’s box office crown with $33 million, raising the epic’s grand total beyond the $300 million mark (in only 17 days). American Reunion came in second, boasting a modest $21.5 million, and the 3d rerelease of Titanic ranked third with $17.4 million.
We have written at length about the Hunger Games, so I …
SCENE & HEARD: “The Hunger Games”
Written by UTG critic Grace Duffy, Scene & Heard takes a look at the music that makes our favorite films so memorable. Whether it’s the 400-piece orchestra Christopher Nolan used for The Dark Knight, or the dozen or so bands that contributed to the soundtrack of Top Gun, there is no denying the impact music has on movies and this column hopes to highlight the best of the best.

How Bad is It?! The Hunger Games
Head of the UTG film department and mastermind behind Reasonable Remakes, Justin Proper has brought us another new column. Ladies and gentleman, allow us to introduce you to: How Bad Is It?
Movies are the number one source of entertainment according to a statistic I just made up. Everyone loves going to the movies. It’s a standard date night, and has helped millions of teens awkwardly hold hands in the dark. Movies are a great escape from reality, and help people relieve the stress of their lives. Unfortunately every once in a while a movie gets released that ruins the …
“Hunger Games” Earns $155 Million, Shatters Box Office Records
We all knew The Hunger Games would be big, but I do not think anyone could have predicted just how successful it would become.
In only three days (and some midnight showings), early estimates from Lionsgate report that The Hunger Games has earned an amazing $155 million domestically. The film, which is an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins, now has the third-highest opening weekend ever, behind Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight. Additionally, it’s also the highest opening of all time for a non-sequel movie and the highest gross for a …
