It was a slow weekend for the cinema, but Batman stays on top. For the third weekend in a row The Dark Knight Rises leads the pack in revenue for the weekend. New releases Total Recall and Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days placed second and third respectively. Total Recall had disappointing numbers despite doing second best of the weekend, especially considering the 125 million dollar budget. You can see the full top ten list and how much each movie made this weekend after the jump.

SCENE & HEARD: The Dark Knight Rises
Written by UTG critic Grace Duffy, Scene & Heard takes a look at the music that makes our favorite films so memorable. Whether it’s the 400-piece orchestra Christopher Nolan used for The Dark Knight, or the dozen or so bands that contributed to the soundtrack of Top Gun, there is no denying the impact music has on movies and this column hopes to highlight the best of the best.

EDITORIAL: “The Watch: How Marketing Doomed The Sci-Fi Comedy’s Chances at the Box Office”
As predicted, The Dark Knight Rises continued to hold audiences in its grip this weekend, easily defeating a duo of new releases including The Watch and Step Up Revolution. Although both debuts opened to unimpressive numbers, The Watch was the biggest loser of the two. The star-studded sci-fi comedy, which finds a group of suburban middle-aged men having to fend off an alien invasion, grossed a disappointing $13 million, a result that almost guarantees that the film will not recover its $68 million production budget. Although raunchy R-rated comedies had a tough season this summer, The Watch’s trio …
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE RESULTS: JULY 27-29
Holy box office numbers, Batman! The Dark Knight Rises reels in the most money for the second weekend in a row! Nolan’s final Batman film made more than the rest of the top five weekend movies combined. The Watch and Step Up Revolution ranked third and fourth respectively, being beat out by the kids movie with the prehistoric mammals. You can see the full top ten list and how much each movie made after the jump.
MOVIE REVIEW: The Dark Knight Rises
Movie: The Dark Knight Rises
Director: Christopher Nolan
I’ve been racking my brains for a week trying to think of some artistic analogy with which to introduce this film. I couldn’t muster one. In actual fact, I’m pleased this review is belated, because it’s given me the chance to take the film in twice and see my opinion do an almost total 180. I thought The Dark Knight Rises was a beautiful, contrarian disaster the first time I watched it – perhaps I was too overhyped or emotional, or a Friday evening viewing after a stressful week at work was …
Hans Zimmer Composes Piece for Aurora Shooting Victims
Just one week ago today, during a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, a madman entered an Aurora, Colorado theater and began firing upon the patrons. 12 were killed.
In the week following, an outpour of support has reached the victims and families affected by the shooting. Dark Knight actor, Christian Bale, visited local hospitals to talk to the shooting victims. Vigils and ceremonies have been conducted in remembrance of those lost. Film industry giants have made statements and offered condolences. Now, legendary film composer (and composer of The Dark Knight Rises), Hans Zimmer, is doing his part.

Christian Bale proves himself a true hero, visits shooting victims in hospital
Sometime today Christian Bale lived up to his heroic role as Batman when he quietly visited several of the victims of the Aurora shooting in the hospital.
The actor made the trip to Colorado on his own accord, not as a representative of any studio, with his wife Sibi. Bale contacted the hospital and arranged the visit in private, asking that no media outlet was to be informed. The hospital’s interim president, Bill Voloch, told reporters afterward that Bale had spent about two and a half hours visiting with the victims and the staff that was helping them.

EDITORIAL: “The Dark Knight Rises: Why The Caped Crusader Couldn’t Take Down The Avengers”
The Dark Knight Rises marks the unofficial end of the 2012 summer movie season, one that has seen its fair share of surprises and disappointments. Although August still has some high-profile releases left – Total Recall, The Bourne Legacy, and The Expendables II among them – the major studios have all released their $200 million dollar box office contenders by now. Marketing budgets were exhausted and records were set, but the party is now over and the next few weeks should see a calmer box office. Warner Brothers’ TDKR was to be the final celebration of the season, …

Shooting At Midnight Screening Of The Dark Knight Rises Leaves 12 Dead
A gunman opened fire at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Denver last night, killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others. Witnesses say the gunman, who was wearing a mask, began shooting about 15 minutes into the film. Police said the man was carrying a knife, a handgun, and a rifle when he was arrested and that one other gun was recovered from the theatre.
