Paul McCartney Performs With Nirvana Members At Hurricane Sandy Benefit Concert, Records Song For Grohl’s ‘Sound City’ Documentary

Take a second to absorb that lengthy headline. It’s a lot to think about.

Featuring artists like the “Piano Man” Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and Chris Martin of Coldplay with Michael Stipe of REM, Wednesday’s 12/12/12 Concert For Sandy Relief was a massive success which not only resulted in a ton of money raised from donations toward relief efforts but more complaints about Kanye West’s attire than Hurricane Sandy itself. As you can see from the link, he wore some form of leather skirt which matched his performance in atrocity value.

Anyway, early yesterday, we …

RUMOR: Nirvana Reunites with Paul McCartney

Before we dig into this one, keep in mind the only sources so far are The Guardian and The Sun, both of whom have a questionable history when it comes to these kind of so-called exclusives.

Rumor on the internet this morning is that Sir Paul McCartney will be joining the surviving members of Nirvana – Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic – for a one time reunion at Madison Square Garden tonight as part of a Hurricane Sandy relief benefit. This would be the first time any form of Nirvana has performed on stage in twenty years, and to …

WATCH: Mumford And Sons Cover The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends” In London

It was bound to happen eventually, right?

Mumford And Sons put on one hell of a homecoming show London’s 02 Arena last night, and today clips from the show have begun to pop up online. One of the more compelling pieces of footages to surface so far has been a stunning live rendition of The Beatles’ classic, “With A Little Help From My Friends,” which fans can now view right here on UTG. The clip showcases a much larger sound and stage presence than many expect, and if you ask me that is probably a good thing. You can view …

REVIEW: Ben Gibbard – Former Lives

Artist: Ben Gibbard
Album: Former Lives
Label: Barsuck

I always thought of Death Cab For Cutie as a Ben Gibbard experience. It made me wonder why he would ever need a solo album – so much of Death Cab is just one man, and so much of it is clearly just written by one guy and orchestrated by a full band; why would a solo album be necessary for the glasses wearing emo man? But then, this is album is surprisingly different than Death Cab For Cutie; it is clearly a solo album in style and songwriting, and that took …

MUSIC HISTORY CLASS: Paul McCartney

On this day in 1942 Sir Paul McCartney was born James Paul McCartney in Liverpool, England. The son of working class parents, Paul grew up modestly, but comfortably, in post-war England. His father, a jazz player and pianist, encouraged Paul to play music at an early age. In the spring of 1957, at the age of fifteen, Paul joined his first band, The Quarrymen. It was the start of a musical revolution that would change not only Rock n’ Roll, but culture in general.

As a member of the Quarrymen, Paul worked closely with another local musician by the name …

MUSIC HISTORY CLASS: Speed of Sound

On this day in 2005, United Kingdom alternative rock juggernauts, Coldplay, became only the second UK band to have a new song enter the Billboard Top Singles chart with their song, “Speed of Sound.” Coldplay’s first single off of their third album, X&Y, entered the charts at #8. What was the previous UK band to achieve such a feet? None other than The Beatles with “Hey Jude” in 1968. In other words, UK bands do not often get their fresh tracks on United States’ charts.

MUSIC HISTORY CLASS – McCartney and Lennon Meet

On this day in 1976, a reunion six years in the making took place; no, not a musical reunion, but rather a personal reunion. Six years after the The Beatles posthumously released what would be their last album, Let It Be,  Paul McCartney and his wife, Linda, visited John Lennon at Lennon’s apartment in New York City.

It was a rare event following the tumultuous final years of the iconic Rock band. Reportedly, the McCartney’s and Lennon spent the evening watching Saturday Night Live. The duo was asked to come down to the SNL studio only several blocks away …

REVIEW: The Shins – Port of Morrow

Artist: The Shins
Album: Port of Morrow
Genre: Indie Rock
Label: Columbia Records

In life, there is a long ass list of things that people take too seriously. Religion, politics and The Shins new album top that list. The second that Port of Morrow hit NPR, masses of talking heads protested against its existence. Like a kid in a grocery store who had been told no to his request for a candy bar, they flopped down in the aisles, kicking and screaming. “This doesn’t sound like The Shins” they exclaimed. “It sounds more like a James Mercer solo record!” One …
