Aficionado Announces Breakup

This is one post that truly pains me to write: Albany, New York based punks Aficionado announced that they are calling it a quits after around nine years of playing together. While there is no real answer as to why the band decided to break up, Aficionado released an official statement via their Facebook, which you can read after the break. Members of Aficionado will be involved in other projects, so keep a look out for those, as well.

That being said, it really bums me out that Aficionado decided to stop making music. I saw them for the first …

REVIEW: The Rival Mob – Mob Justice

Band: The Rival Mob
Album: Mob Justice
Genre: Hardcore
Label: Revelation Records

The Rival Mob is one of those bands in hardcore that has an extreme amount of hype. Like a disturbing amount. Want a used t-shirt on eBay? $40. Want a 7-inch? Don’t even bother looking. When bands have such extreme amounts of demand, it must be for a reason, right? That isn’t always the case. There are tons of bands that are just hype but have no backbone. The Rival Mob is not one of those bands, and their newest full length Mob Justice proves why they are …

Times are tough in the world. Everyone seems to be short on cash, and many are trying to find a way to make a quick buck. For some, scalping tickets to sporting events, concerts, and the like has always been a pretty easy science to master. The concept is simple:

REVIEW: Vinnie Caruana – City By the Sea

Artist: Vinnie Caruana
Album: City By the Sea
Label: Run For Cover Records
Genre: Punk/Acoustic

If you like pop-punk music and don’t know who Vinnie Caruana is, you’re probably really young, and that’s not really your fault. For those who don’t know, Vinnie Caruana has been in the pop-punk scene for a while now, first becoming famous for fronting the iconic band The Movielife. Now as the singer of I Am the Avalanche, Vinnie is slowly but surely making his way back into the ears of kids all over the punk scene. However today, I’m not reviewing either …

REVIEW: MINDSET – Leave No Doubt

Band: MINDSET
Album: Leave No Doubt
Genre: Hardcore
Label: React! Records

I’ve been straight edge my entire life (that means I’ve led a substance free lifestyle to those who don’t know), and frankly I’m really proud of it. People make jokes about it to me all the time, poking their fun and thinking it’s weird, but it’s always something that I have to explain, then I have to wait for acceptance later. It’s truly frustrating, and I’m starting to grow tired of having to explain myself to people, but it’s something I’ve learned to deal with.  It’s always an uphill …

REVIEW: The Dollyrots – The Dollyrots

Artist: The Dollyrots
Album: The Dollyrots
Genre: Pop-punk/pop-rock
Label: Arrested Youth Records

Four albums in, it’s business as usual for pop rock duo The Dollyrots on this eponymous release. The band’s sound is clinically breezy and spirited as always; the album laden with feelgood, suitably infectious anthems and odes to carefree living. It’s a populist and thoroughly enjoyable record, with the only potential criticism the flimsiness of it all. It doesn’t seek to endure or engage or antagonise but is more about enjoyment and cheer, rejecting any darkness or gravitas in favour of something more upbeat and in-your-face. The Dollyrots

REVIEW: Yellowcard – Southern Air

Artist: Yellowcard
Album: Southern Air
Genre: Pop-punk
Label: Hopeless Records

Yellowcard is one of the bands that I grew up listening to. And not just, “Oh I love that album Ocean Avenue,” or, “Yeah ‘Only One’ is so good!” No. That is not me at all. Yellowcard was one of those bands when I was younger that I completely obsessed over, poured over lyric sheets, deconstructed songs, and was the soundtrack to my childhood. They are such a part of me that people frankly don’t really understand. My friends within the hardcore scene poke fun and say things like …

STREAM: Police & Thieves – Live @ WMUC

DC-based hardcore group Police & Thieves are no strangers to awesome live shows. The band have been playing locally and around the East Coast for a while now, and I’ve found that the best way to experience them is to see them play in front of a crowd. Police & Thieves decided that they wanted to capture their live show and put out the results online for anyone to hear and download.

Their newest release Live @ WMUC takes songs from their fantastic records Fracturing and Amor Y Guerra and plays them in a live setting. The set was recorded …

REVIEW: Make Do and Mend – Everything You Ever Loved

Artist: Make Do and Mend
Album: Everything You Ever Loved
Genre: Punk
Label: Rise Records

I was at home with my older brother this past weekend, and one of the things we bond over is showing each other music in the car. I’m rarely tolerant of his music (sorry man, I know i’m a little stubborn but I still can’t get into a lot of modern rap or that weird Sublime style reggae), however he always listens to what I have to play, and that is something that has always meant a lot to me. He said something to me …
