EDITORIAL: DMX’s ‘It’s Dark And Hell Is Hot’ Turns 15

We talk a lot about nostalgia, but rarely when it comes to the world of hip hop. Aside from our features on Lord Willin and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” we have been admittedly lacking in our celebration of legendary releases in hip hop. This morning, however, a headline hit me in the face with all the power the reminder of how old you are possibly can. I knew right away I needed to write something, even if it were only a few lines, because this album was something special to me (even if I was 11 when it came out). Today …

XXL recently had an interview with LA-based rapper ScHoolboy Q about his upcoming full length, Oxymoron, when he dropped a major bomb – he plans on including some of Oxymoron‘s featured artists in a new supergroup.

Don’t take our word for it though, here’s a snippet of what ScHoolboy Q had to say.

“…As of right now, I don’t now. After this album, shit, I want to work with both the homies. I want to do a project with Soul and I want to do one with Rocky. Maybe we can even put our own little group together

Later this month he will release his latest free album, Crew Cuts (out 2/20), but for now we have a new single and video to enjoy.

Hitting the net early this morning, “Cake Boy” proves Hoodie is just as talented and lighthearted as ever, with slick visuals and a catchy beat you’ll want to hear again and again. We’re hoping to …

Seinfeld Jerry

Jerry Seinfeld Working On Rap Mixtape With Wale

Jerry Seinfeld will always be remembered as the stand up comic who owned the 90s with his show about nothing, Seinfeld; may god have mercy on our souls if I ever have to explain to a child that he was funny and isn’t “the guy from Bee Movie“. I pray that day never comes. The hit sitcom’s cultural reach is deep; rapper Wale made two mixtapes that took influence from it, 2008′s The Mixtape About Nothing and 2010′s More About Nothing.

Now, Wale and Jerry Seinfeld are working on a mixtape together. Jerry will be penning lyrics, …

Flying Lotus Gives First Interview Regarding Captain Murphy Rap Project

Wrapping up 2012, multi-genre producer Flying Lotus came out as the true identity of the mysterious and cleverly named rapper, Captain Murphy. I say clever as Captain Murphy is an (awesome) character from Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim show, Sealab 2021, and as Flying Lotus has produced a significant amount of bumper music for Adult Swim, it makes perfect sense that he would adopt the moniker of one of their best animated offerings.

Some people were disappointed by the reveal as they had assumed that it was Tyler, The Creator or some Odd Future affiliate, but most were thrilled to …

EDITORIAL: The Curious Case Of Rick Ross Vs. Rick Ross

Identity is everything in music, and that goes double for urban artists. The way fans envision your day-to-day life directly correlates with whether or not they will believe the lines you deliver in songs, and some times that need to look “real” leads artists to lie through their teeth. Those needing proof of this need look no further than the story of Rick Ross, or should I say William Leonard Roberts II, and his current legal entanglement with one of the biggest drug traffickers in United States history.

Rick Ross burst onto the music scene in 2006 with his debut …

UTG LIST: Best Mixtapes of 2012

2012 has been an incredible year for music. From rock, to pop, hip hop, and the world’s obsession with “Gangnam Style,” there have been many great offerings for fans of any genre of music. Hip hop, however, has been especially fortunate thanks to the rise of artists working harder than ever to ensure their mixtapes flow like albums. More than any other realm of music, hip hop is built on artists establishing relationships with the listener through the release of free material, and you could not throw a metaphorical rock through the blogosphere this year without finding a …

Das Racist Call It Quits

Rumors about Brooklyn alternative hip-hop group Das Racist calling it quits have been swirling around the internet and now Under The Gun Review can confirm that they are no more. “You guys wanna know the secret? Alright, so I’m going to do some Das Racist songs, but Das Racist is breaking up and we’re not a band anymore.”

In response to the onstage antics, Kool A.D. tweeted:
