REVIEW: PUP – ‘PUP’

Artist: PUP
Album: PUP
Genres: Punk Rock, Alternative Rock
Label: SideOneDummy

It’s hard to contextualize a band on their debut album. A genre listing could mean so many things. What does punk mean, especially if they are going pop? Does it mean pop-punk in today’s sense of The Wonder Years and State Champs? Does it mean nods to Drive-Thru Records, New Found Glory and the like? Is it more along the lines of The Offspring and 90s skater-punk melodies?

From the opening chords and lyrics of PUP’s self-titled album, something unusual was happening. Not quite math rock, the opening …

blacklist royals

UTG INTERVIEW: Blacklist Royals @ SXSW

Raspy and relinquishing, Blacklist Royals are a pure dose of healthy, American punk rock. Fronted by twin brothers Nat and Rob Rufus, the band is honest and forthright in their songwriting. Releases such as the 2013 single “Righteous Child” show a band writing songs full of melodic energy and power. Fans are gravitating toward the band due to their relentless touring and passionate songwriting, which is what listeners should expect from the 2014 LP, Die Young With Me. Teaming up with producer Ted Hutt (The Bouncing Souls, Gaslight Anthem, Flogging Molly), the band have created …

REVIEW: Cloud Nothings – ‘Here and Nowhere Else’

Artist: Cloud Nothings
Album: Here and Nowhere Else
Genre: Indie Rock / Punk
Label: Carpark Records

One of everyone’s favorite records of 2012, Cloud Nothings’ Attack On Memory delivered everything anyone could want in a loud, grungy punk rock record. It was raw, energetic, cathartic and, most importantly, resonant — particularly to the frustrated post-graduate generation who could identify with anthemic refrains like “I need time to stay useless” or “I thought I would be more than this.”

While technically their third record, Attack On Memory might as well have been Cloud Nothings’ debut, announcing a heavier, more aggressive departure …

UTG INTERVIEW: The Smith Street Band

The past two years have seen Melbourne, Australia’s The Smith Street Band grow from local cult favourites to international touring folk-punk juggernaut. Much of that rise to prominence can be attributed to two factors; the unprecedented success of their critically acclaimed debut full-length album, Sunshine and Technology, and the band’s relentless and tireless approach to touring in support of that release. A sleeper hit that gathered momentum the old-fashioned way, by word of mouth, Sunshine and Technology opened the world’s doors to The Smith Street Band and the Melbourne, Australia based four-piece allowed their passionate live show and affable …

Fat Mike of NOFX

UTG PHOTOS: NOFX (11/30/13)

Under The Gun Review sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to photograph NOFX at Irving Plaza in New York, NY.

The team over at Fat Wreck Chords has always treated us well and Under The Gun appreciates that. Simply put, Fat Wreck knows how to do punk rock, because Fat Mike and the boys in NOFX helped invent it. If you’re an old school punk, you may argue that they actually helped develop it, but that’s just semantics. After 30 years of being an influential band, you’re a pioneer either way you look at it. NOFX will be a staple in punk …
