Say Anything (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: Say Anything & The Front Bottoms (6/28/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph Say Anything on June 28, 2014.

On June 28, Say Anything took the stage to a sold-out theater in the heart of New York City. The band, who performed alongside The Front Bottoms, The So So Glos, and You Blew It!, have worked for over a decade to reach a point in their careers where their name can be proudly displayed on a marquee in one of the world’s busiest intersections.

The band is touring off their most recent record …

UTG PHOTOS: Hardcore Devo Tour (6/19/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph Devo on June 19, 2014.

Last Thursday, Devolutionaries from literally around the world gathered in New York City for the most exciting and bizarre performance I’ve ever seen in Times Square.

“Nixon to address nation tonight at 8 as resignation rumors grow,” reads the headline on a newspaper Mark Mothersbaugh is holding when the curtains open. The room is black except for a single spotlight and immediately an entire room is transported back in time.

The New Wave innovators of electronic art took …

Phil Anselmo & Zakk Wylde (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: Black Label Society & Down (5/10/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph The Revolver Golden Gods Tour on May 10, 2014.

Over 2,000 members of the BLS New York Chapter gathered Saturday night for a sold-out evening of metal music. The stacked lineup included Black Label Society, Down, Devil You Know and Butcher Babies.

It was satisfying seeing the proud display of heavy music in Times Square. Tourists passing by and looking at the sold-out marquee for the likes of Zakk Wylde and Phil Anselmo is just as satisfying to watch as …

UTG PHOTOS: Bayside & Four Year Strong (4/4/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Best Buy Theater in New York City to photograph The Great American Cult Tour on April 4, 2014.

Bayside just wrapped up the end of their headlining Great American Cult Tour. Along for the ride were Four Year Strong, Daylight (who’ve since changed their name to Superheaven) and Mixtapes. If you didn’t get a chance to make it out to one of the shows, have no fear, because three out of four of them will be on this summer’s Warped Tour. To catch Superheaven, you can see their …

HIM (D SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: HIM & Anathema (3/16/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Irving Plaza in New York City to photograph HIM and Anathema on March 16, 2014.

On March 14 and 16, HIM and Anathema were able to draw some heavy duty crowds to New York’s Irving Plaza. The audience wasn’t a sea of 16-year-old screaming girls, which was a breath of fresh air compared to many of the shows I attend. That being said, I was overwhelmingly shocked at the level of noise that room was able to create through screaming and cheering alone.

Professional sound systems and acoustics were no match for …

Son Lux

LIVE REVIEW: Son Lux @ Institute Of Contemporary Art (3/21/14)

Out of all the acts listed on Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art 2014 schedule, experimental electronic musician Son Lux was easily the most thrilling prospect. As a giant glass cube, the ICA is one of Boston’s more modern buildings, only rivaled by MIT’s Stata CenterSon Lux, the stage name for 34-year-old Ryan Lott, blended in with the museum’s hidden theater three floors up, exploring dark synths and hybrid chamber pop with a relaxed mentality that wrangled the overall sound into one bubble.

Flogging Molly at Roseland Ballroom

UTG PHOTOS: Flogging Molly (2/27/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Roseland Ballroom in New York City to photograph Flogging Molly on February 27, 2014.

In 2004, Flogging Molly released Within A Mile Of Home. I was 13 years old and I bought the 12” record at the mall. It was one of my early new vinyl purchases. Shortly after, I purchased their previous record Drunken Lullabies (2002) on a picture disc. A decade has since gone by and I’ve finally had the chance to see the band perform. From what I can remember, many of the band’s tours were sponsored by …

Shaggy at Brooklyn Bowl (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: Shaggy (2/25/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to Brooklyn Bowl in New York to photograph Shaggy on February 25, 2014.

On February 25, Brooklyn Bowl hosted an epic concert to a sold-out crowd. The venue, which has a capacity of 600, has hosted quite a few packed shows. From the Bouncing Souls to Action Bronson, I’ve had a blast every time I’ve been there. This show, in particular was fantastic. Well, if we want to get technical, it was boombastic. Yes, I went there.

Shaggy took stage in Brooklyn to a venue that features a bowling alley and some …

Hopsin at Irving Plaza (D. SKANK PHOTOGRAPHY)

UTG PHOTOS: Hopsin (2/22/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to photograph Hopsin at Irving Plaza in New York City on February 22, 2014.

Hopsin, Hopsin, Hopsin. I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff go down at Irving Plaza. It’s one of those iconic New York City venues that although it doesn’t have the highest capacity still manages to book big names. I’ve seen Wiz Khalifa there for $10. I’ve seen the likes of Rise Against, Story of the Year, From First To Last, and countless more command that room. Hell, my father even saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers there once. The …

Kaiser Chiefs in Brooklyn

UTG PHOTOS: Kaiser Chiefs (2/19/14)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to photograph Kaiser Chiefs at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn on February 19, 2014.

It’s safe to say that most people who like indie rock would appreciate Kaiser Chiefs. Although I wasn’t a “die-hard” fan of the band before going to photograph them, I left with the notion that I would be one soon.

The band performed a sold out show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg where an eclectic group of fans gathered to see the Chiefs play. Being a British band, it wasn’t unusual to see how many …

Fat Mike of NOFX

UTG PHOTOS: NOFX (11/30/13)

Under The Gun Review sent photographer, Derek Scancarelli, to photograph NOFX at Irving Plaza in New York, NY.

The team over at Fat Wreck Chords has always treated us well and Under The Gun appreciates that. Simply put, Fat Wreck knows how to do punk rock, because Fat Mike and the boys in NOFX helped invent it. If you’re an old school punk, you may argue that they actually helped develop it, but that’s just semantics. After 30 years of being an influential band, you’re a pioneer either way you look at it. NOFX will be a staple in punk …

UTG PHOTOS: Fall Out Boy & Panic! At The Disco (9/20/13)

Under The Gun recently sent photographer, Ryan Tuttle, to The Honda Center in Anaheim, CA on September 4, 2013.

On September 20, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, and Twenty One Pilots played to a sold out crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.

Unfortunately, I missed Twenty One Pilots‘ set by just a few minutes, but based off of the crowd’s enthusiasm, it was clear that I missed out on an epic performance.

Panic! At The Disco delivered an ear-shattering rock performance from start to finish. Lead singer, Brendon Urie, pranced about the stage effortlessly, all …
