Pennsylvania Teen Loses MSU Football Scholarship Due To Rap Career

This story should be filed under “poor decision making.”

Extol, Pennsylvania teenager and high school wide receiver Jay Harris has lost his athletic scholarship to Michigan State University after details of his aspiring rap career were made public.

Coming to us from Philadelphia newspaper The Inquirer, it seems all the fuss began roughly a month ago when Harris, who goes by the stage name Jay DatBull, began posting a series of relatively explicit music videos online. The biggest single, “DatBull 4 Life,” appears to feature Harris smoking weed while operating a motor vehicle and bragging about doing molly with …

EXCLUSIVE: Patterns Cover Nickelback’s “Animals”

North Carolina’s Patterns have been cutting their teeth in the underground scene since 2011, and today we are very excited to be helping the group premiere their cover of Nickelback’s tongue-in-cheek smash, “Animals.”

Taken from the 2005 album, All The Right Reasons, “Animals” was originally a driving, balls-to-the-wall rock song about hooking up in the backseat of a fast car. In their reinterpretation, Patterns have emphasized the rock elements of the song, making everything excessively heavier, and the results are as wild and fun as you could possibly imagine. You can stream their cover at the end of this …

MUSIC VIDEO: Daylight – “Life in a Jar”

Pennsylvania punks Daylight released a music video today on MTV Buzzworthy for their song “Life in a Jar.” Filmed by Alex Henery (previously of Basement fame), the video has the same grungy aesthetic that Daylight’s debut full length, Jar, showcases so well. Here at UTG we can really appreciate a solid music video, and this is one you should definitely be checking out.

Daylight released their new album, Jar, today on Run For Cover Records, so check out their Bandcamp if you like what you hear.

Minshara Auditioning New Drummers, Ex-Drummer Left For Crobot

Pennsylvania natives Minshara are auditioning new drummers. Their old drummer, Tony Kobel, left to join the band Crobot, and remains on amiable terms with the band. The irony here is that Minshara still has a gig lined up in November, but doesn’t officially have a drummer yet. Whether that means they’ll be playing a show without a percussionist or with a temporary replacement, I don’t know.

Minshara’s badass debut EP came out earlier this year. You can click “Read more” to stream it here.

Code Orange Kids 2012

MUSIC VIDEO: Code Orange Kids – Flowermouth

WHOA. Pennsylvania hardcore group Code Orange Kids released a new music video for their song “Flowermouth,” and it is my favorite track by them, easily. I’m loving this song, and the music video really fits the vibe that this track gives off. While there is a review coming from yours truly, this song is just the beginning of a fantastic debut release from the band. Love Is Love // Return to Dust comes out on November 20 on Deathwish Inc. You’re definitely going to want to pick this up, as I truly believe this will rocket Code Orange Kids to …

REVIEW: Handguns – Angst

Artist: Handguns
Album: Angst
Genre: Pop-Punk
Label: Pure Noise Records

Handguns is a pop punk band from Pennsylvania that kids have latched onto as oflate. I’ve seen them a few times live, and when Don’t Bite Your Tongue came out, I was really into the release, especially the song “I Hope He Kills You” (I was really bitter about stuff and the song worked). However, since that song was released, I kind of fell out of love with the band. I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s just changing tastes or wanting something more, but Handguns just haven’t really …

UTG INTERVIEW: June Divided

In between all of the madness that is the Vans Warped Tour, Philadelphia rockers June Divided took the time to discuss their sound, Indiegogo, the tour life, and much more.

June Divided is among the newest bands on the Vans Warped Tour, playing on the Ernie Ball stage with the likes of other smaller bands that have been picking up attention  from the masses. The band just released their debut full length, Backbone, just this last month.
