UTG @ CMJ 2014: The Madness That Was ’68

No Sleep Records threw quite a party Tuesday night and UTG was there to witness it.

The No Sleep ’Til CMJ Showcase brought a whopping eleven bands out to play at The Paper Box in Brooklyn. The diversity in the showcase’s lineup brought fans from different scenes together in a tiny space where gear filled almost half of the floor.

Closed out by Taking Back Sunday’s John Nolan, several good acts preceded (XERXES, Chris Farren, The Felix Culpa, etc.) Directly before Nolan, however, was a band called ’68. This two-piece, hard rock outfit comprised of vocalist Josh Scogin …

Hundredth Signs To Hopeless Records

In one of the most unexpected stories of the week, Hopeless Records has signed South Carolina hardcore band Hundredth. The label will be reissuing all of the band’s previous work, including their recent Revolt and Resist EPs, 2011′s Let Go, and for the first time on vinyl, 2010′s When Will We Surrender. The band will be releasing a new album through the label in 2015.

While Hopeless has dabbled into this brand of hardcore before by signing Cruel Hand earlier this year, this news comes as a surprise to fans of the band and label. I always …

REVIEW: Moose Blood – ‘I’ll Keep You In My Mind, From Time to Time’

Artist: Moose Blood
Album: I’ll Keep You In My Mind, From Time to Time
Label: No Sleep Records
Genre: Indie, Emo

Fall is here. It’s my favorite time of the year, and as such, the albums I listen to during this magical season are incredibly important. It takes a certain type of band to fit into my Fall rotation. AFI and My Chemical Romance are obvious mainstays, but I need other bands to fill those late night drives to spooky places. The ones where you have your windows all the way down, with your hoodie on, and you can smell …

Xerxes Release New Song “A Toast” From ‘Collision Blonde’

Xerxes, the melodic hardcore band you’ve been hearing so much about lately, have released a new song from their upcoming album, Collision Blonde, over at AltPress.

Titled “A Toast,” the new song is reminiscent of the kind of hardcore that Touché Amoré have been making in the past few years. If that aligns with your tastes, you’re definitely going to want to check this out. Xerxes singer Calvin Philley commented on the song’s subject matter:

I had a short but intense romantic stint with a girl studying in Chicago at a university that will go unnamed during this

REVIEW: Puig Destroyer – ‘Puig Destroyer’

Artist: Puig Destroyer
Album: Puig Destroyer
Genre: Grindcore
Label: No Sleep Records

The 2014 baseball postseason is here! From the reigning champion Boston Red Sox not making it this year to the Kansas City Royals making the playoffs for the first time in 29 years, anything can happen in the game of baseball. That is also the case for the baseball-centric grindcore outfit Puig Destroyer. With a moniker influenced by star outfielder Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers (who was introduced to the band’s music last year at an MLB event) and influential grindcore act Pig Destroyer, the …

UTG INTERVIEW: Foreign Tongues Discuss Their Current Sound And What’s Next

On a chilly autumn evening I made my way north to the Riverwalk Cafe in Nashua, NH to see Foreign Tongues and a line-up of local artists. The Riverwalk Cafe is a wonderful coffeehouse that has just recently expanded its territory into a new bar. The environment is warm, welcoming, and a perfect indie outlet for the Nashua area, a place that seems to be lacking in local venues.

I watched as Foreign Tongues unleashed a wave of distortion, emotion, and static, flawlessly performing their set. Featuring tracks spanning their entire discography, the band emitted energy, calm, and consistency as …
