Skate And Surf Festival Confirms First Artist For 2015 Edition

We love Skate and Surf Festival here at UTG, and we’re eagerly anticipating details on next year’s edition of the fest. Today, the people behind the festival have revealed the first artist playing in 2015: Dropkick Murphys.

Presumably one of the headliners, Dropkick Murphys are a big acquisition for the New Jersey punk music festival; this year was headlined by Saosin, Circa Survive, and Midtown. Skate and Surf will be held next year in Asbury Park, NJ and loyalty tickets go on sale November 28, but we’re still waiting to hear about a final date. If history is any …

REVIEW: The Gaslight Anthem – ‘Get Hurt’

Artist: The Gaslight Anthem
Album: Get Hurt
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Island

If you spend too much time attempting to vivisect the songs that make up The Gaslight Anthem’s fifth album, Get Hurt, you may very well miss it entirely. As listeners, we are used to the blue collar, Americana themes presented by the act, traversing through narratives of Saturday nights, lost loves, heartbreak, and a consistent theme of lessening within our lives. Attempting to deduce each track individually, grouping each experience with past Gaslight albums such as Handwritten, American Slang, and The ’59 Sound, …

Prawn

LISTEN: Prawn – “Thalassa”

There has always been something incredibly entrancing about Prawn’s tones. They are soft, bright, full of reverb and textures, all while consistently creating a crunch of dynamic sound when needed. Following this contrast of wavelike statics in their sound, the band has released their newest track, “Thalassa,” from their upcoming full-length Kingfisher.

Beginning like a Prawn adventure would, “Thalassa” starts with a wonderful horn-assisted intro, seamlessly sewing itself into the alluring verse. But, as previously mentioned, it is not long before Prawn carry you up from the transcendent environment they presented in the beginning of the track, for the …

Real Estate

Watch Real Estate Debut New Song “White Light” and Cover Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So”

It’s been quite a year for New Jersey indie rockers Real Estate. Not only did they put out an excellent new album, Atlas, but they announced a new live EP, shared US tour dates, and taught us how to play “Crime” on guitar. Naturally the next step was to stop by La Blogothèque for a dependably breathtaking live session. The 30-minute video has frontman Martin Courtney, guitarist Matt Modanile, and bassist Alex Bleeker playing in a cozy indoor setting to a small group of onlookers.

The video catches Real Estate playing music off of Atlas, including …

Sharon Van Etten Are We There

REVIEW: Sharon Van Etten – ‘Are We There’

Artist: Sharon Van Etten
Album: Are We There
Genre: Folk Rock
Label: Jagjaguwar

Sharon Van Etten is a rarity among musicians. The New Jersey native will step onstage and squabble with her three-piece backing band, combining nervous jokes with a half-snort laugh that would probably get a kid bullied in middle school. She’s a bit clumsy, somewhat outspoken, and always innocently honest. It’s been five years since she began twirling around the music scene, cutting herself open again and again for her songs, yet despite the continual applause she’s gotten onstage and off, Etten has always …

UTG’s Must-See Acts At Skate And Surf 2014

Festival season is quickly approaching and we here at Under The Gun are thoroughly excited about it. The closest festival in our sight is Skate and Surf 2014. It is once again being held in Asbury Park, NJ right on the oceanfront and we are scheduled to be bringing you some great video interviews from throughout the weekend.

If you’re a nostalgic music fan in your 20s or 30s or even a 16-year-old kid, chances are the Skate and Surf Festival will be an enjoyable (and unforgettable) experience. There are plenty of bands to choose from, but you aren’t …

brand new starland

LIVE REVIEW: Brand New @ Starland Ballroom

To some extent, I’ve always thought that Brand New was just a tad overrated. Sure, they put out two of my favorite records of all time and I love just about all of their output as a band, but there’s something odd about the way that their fans fawn over them unconditionally despite years of relative inactivity and 2009′s extremely polarizing Daisy. Naturally, when the band uncharacteristically announced a a short tour in which they’d play their whole discography over two shows on each coast, their near-religious following made it just short of impossible to get tickets. After failing …

SavesTheDay-Jun2013

STREAM: Saves the Day – “Ring Pop”

Iconic Jersey pop-punk band Saves the Day released a new song today named “Ring Pop.” The lyric video is courtesy of AltPress, and it consists of lyrics actually handwritten by singer Chris Conley. “Ring Pop” is an undoubtedly catchy love song, and really harkens back to a more classic Saves the Day sound. This is the third song released by the band for this record, and they only get better and better.

“Ring Pop” comes off of Saves the Day’s next self-titled album, which will be released on September 17, via Equal Vision Records.

You can check out …

ToastedPlastic

STREAM/DOWNLOAD: Toasted Plastic – ‘June Highs’ (Album)

Toasted Plastic are an up and coming emo/math rock band from New Jersey working largely on the DIY circuit. (Their booking information even says “We will try to play any show.”) The weird rockers have released a full length today called June Highs on the new Bandcamp. It isn’t the band’s first album, but it is their first release in two years, as Ares Vallis came out in November 2011.

It’s unknown as to whether this will get a physical release. That said, everyone interested in modern emo or math rock should check out this killer record. Stream …

Legendary New Jersey Venue Maxwell’s To Close In July

A true rock institution is set to close at the end of July, and the decision is not what anyone had planned.

According to a new article on NJ.Com, the lease to Maxwell’s will be completed at the end of July. Todd Abramson, the club’s booking agent and co-owner, explained the tough decision to close by explaining the terms offered to the club for lease renewal would have put the business in a tough place.

“We were offered a renewal with rates that weren’t necessarily onerous,” says Abramson, “But after much thought, given the changing nature of Hoboken and …

UTG PHOTOS: Skate & Surf Day Two (5/19/13)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Corbin Alvae, to New Jersey for Skate & Surf Festival at Six Flags Great Adventure.

Day Two…Once again, what a line-up! This time around I don’t have a funny story (sad, I know) but it did do one thing…RAIN! Like Day One, it was on and off, but wasn’t too bad. Anyways! I kicked Day Two off with Ohio metal band, Dangerkids. Holy shit! I heard some buzz about them, ended up checking out their music online, really impressed! …

UTG PHOTOS: Skate & Surf Day One (5/18/13)

Under The Gun sent photographer, Corbin Alvae, to New Jersey for Skate & Surf Festival at Six Flags Great Adventure.

Skate And Surf Festival: DAY ONE. Where to start?! First off, before I get into my Day One coverage, here’s a quick little story:

When I decided that I was interested in covering the festival, which was about 2 months prior to the actual date, I was beyond excited to travel to New Jersey, for one reason: WARM WEATHER. Michigan weather is on and off and for me — that usually never goes too well, and frankly, it grinds my …
