UTG INTERVIEW: Pitchfork Music Festival Bands on Their Favorite Chicago Hangouts

We’re a little more than excited for Pitchfork Music Festival to arrive this year considering it has an awesome record fair (Chirp!), top notch food vendors (Rice Table! Puffs of Doom!), and a beautifully stacked lineup (Slowdive! Beck! Neutral Milk Hotel!). The festival will take place over at Union Park on July 18-20 for three days of great music before dispersing to Chicago’s playground of venues for a series of after-shows. And so the countdown to musical bliss begins.

To help festivalgoers make the most out of their experience, we asked some of the bands about their favorite spots, where …

Fun Fun Fun Fest Announces 2014 Lineup

For a smaller festival, Austin’s Fun Fun Fun Fest annually boasts one of the States’ strongest and most diverse lineups. I had an absolute blast when I attended the festival last year, and those planning to attend this year should expect a similar experience as the festival just announced its expectedly awesome 2014 lineup.

Headlining the festival’s metal and punk-centric Black Stage are Judas Priest, King Diamond (playing his first U.S. show since 2005) and Death From Above 1979. It also includes the second announced reunion gig from The Blood Brothers, following last week’s FYF Fest announcement.

The hip-hop …

See Neutral Milk Hotel’s First Setlist in 15 Years

Music aficionados around the world couldn’t contain their excitement when Neutral Milk Hotel announced a reunion tour back in April. Their lo-fi, indie rockness only existed between 1989 to 1999, but generations have passed along their material with care and love as if it were a part of their own family history. Now, 15 years later, Jeff Mangum and Neutral Milk Hotel reunited for the first time on Friday night to perform their first show at Baltimore’s St. John’s Church. See the full setlist after the jump.

The band performed an 18-song set, beginning with the gut-punching, emotional “Two-Headed Boy” …

Neutral Milk Hotel Add Winter Tour Dates

East coasters, rejoice. Indie rock royalty Neutral Milk Hotel have just added a ton of new dates to their tour, including multiple nights in New York City, Boston, Pennsylvania, Canada, and more southern states. Jeff Mangum, Scott Spillane, Julian Koster, and Jeremy Barnes will all be present for the month-long stretch of shows this upcoming winter.

Seriously, let’s take a moment to thank the heavens that the “more to come” announcement has now been fulfilled. Now check your local venue to see when tickets get on sale, because these will sell out immediately.

Bonus: a portion of concert …

Neutral Milk Hotel Tour To Be Full International Tour Through 2014

Well, maybe we won’t have to travel south. The announcement earlier this week of a Neutral Milk Hotel reunion had a small indication there would be more dates, saying there was “more to come,” but it was hard to say for sure, as the announcement also included the quote “…and of water course womb rume is a wandering the welkin woman…” Point being, it’s hard to decipher old Elephant 6 messages.

Pollstar, the standard for music industry touring data, got a quote out of NMH’s long time booking agent Jim Romeo of Ground Control Touring, who said …

HOLY SH!T: Neutral Milk Hotel Reunite For Brief Tour

Wow. I want to say wow times a thousand. A few short years ago, I never would’ve expected Jeff Mangum to come out of his hiding away, forever living on as some indie rock myth. Yet, it’s 2013, and I’ve got to see him perform as a solo artist twice. Each time it left me holding out hope that I would one day get to see Neutral Milk Hotel perform in full.

Well, 2013 is a year to be lived. Neutral Milk Hotel will be reuniting for five shows. That’s a pretty lame tour, overall. But I don’t care. You …

Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) Extends Solo Tour, Will Continue Touring

When Jeff Mangum first announced his 2013 tour, it was widely thought to be his final tour ever. After all, his 2012 tour was his first real series of shows since Neutral Milk Hotel was still a band (I’m excluding festival one-offs).  A message with new tour dates has been released on his website that’s worded in such a quirky way, you have to think Jeff is behind it (although it is signed Artoria Gibbons).

It reads “dear friends,

with mouth music the meaning seems to say that there are rumors going round that that this is to be

WATCH: Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) And Guy Picciotto (Fugazi) – “Sign The Dotted Line” (The Tall Dwarfs Cover)

Jeff Mangum has played for the Occupy Wall Street movement many times; his original return to performing was a spontaneous performance in New York City. He lives in the city now, after all. Guy Picciotto has been more of a producer than a band member since Fugazi‘s hiatus. However, the two independent legends joined together to cover a song originally by The Tall Dwarfs, “Sign The Dotted Line”.

Take note of Jeff’s no shave November and watch the performance here on UTG by clicking “Read more”. Be sure to check out Jeff’s full tour dates here, too.…
