We post a lot of hip hop, but as a rule of thumb we do our best to steer clear of freestyles. It’s not that we don’t appreciate the artform, we definitely do, but every time we post one person’s verse we receive a few dozen messages from up and comers that think their verse is better. It’s exhausting and eats up too much inbox space that could be used by artists with their own original material to share, so we keep anything that could encourage such reaction to a minimum whenever possible. December 12th, 2012 Jacob Tender Sunday night, Chiodos played a hometown gig that would be the last for the band until 2013.
To set 2012 off right, the band invited Flint, MI rapper and UTG favorite Jon Connor to the stage to freestyle over an instrumental section during “A Letter From Janelle.” Jon set the room on fire with some quick verses and got the crowd participating with a little call and response.

If we at UTG had any sway with execs, we’d sign him today without a second of hesitation. However, that is not the case, so another post about how great his music is will have to suffice.
