The Next Band To Change Your Life: Empty Houses

If you have been following along to the Twitter chatter in the alternative music realm this week you have no doubt seen someone mention Empty Houses, the Detroit-based trio of Ali Shea, Adam Mercer, and Dave Mackinder (Fireworks). January is a busy time so it’s completely understandable if you didn’t have time to commit to the article those tweets hopefully included, or perhaps you did only to find you had no time to commit to the music in store. That’s fine. Social media has become a flood of ICYMI headlines as of late, so you’ll still have plenty of chances …

Members Of Fireworks Start New Side Project, Empty Houses

Two members of the UTG-recommended pop rock outfit Fireworks have started a side project alongside vocalist Ali Shea. The band’s name is Empty Houses, and according to the trio, it will have a sound inspired by Motown. In a brief interview with Noisey they talk about their inspiration and reason for deciding to take the project’s sound in an entirely different direction from Fireworks. You can read a snippet of the conversation below, and the full interview here.

Empty Houses have already released their first EP, and it’s available for purchase through Bandcamp for only $1. The EP is …

UTG VIDEO PREMIERE: The Weekend Classic – “Fireworks”

This may very well be the last UTG premiere of 2014. If true, at least we are going out with a bang.

The Weekend Classic have been on our radar since the release of their debut double single at the tail-end of summer. Their unique take on the border between pop-punk and pop-rock offers catchy hooks and infectious melodies that no one can shake. We have done everything in our power to keep you updated on their plans up to this point, and today we are thrilled to share the world premiere of their video for “Fireworks.”

Set to home …

UTG PREMIERE: Brett Ayala Jones (Fireworks) – “Bullet Holes”

Brett Ayala Jones, best known as the guitarist of pop-punk outfit Fireworks, has plans to release his debut solo EP in 2015. Entitled Tramp, the record’s three songs enlist the assistance of Teddy Roberts and Adam Mercer (both fellow members of Fireworks), on the drums and organ, respectively, alongside Sam Harris performing the upright bass.

Fortunately for you, we have an exclusive stream of “Bullet Holes,” the second track from Tramp. It’s chock full of warm, folksy goodness, that everyone could use a taste of during these cold winter months, so follow the jump to give it …

Long Read: 9 Songs From 2014 That Changed My Life

We’re getting fairly deep into December at this point, which means every publication and internet personality who considers themselves someone of influence are doing their best to craft clickbait worthy lists of the best things 2014 had to offer. Most of these features are crafted by a team of people pouring over scores and arguing over personal preferences, all of which is something I’ve taken part in many times over the last six years of my writing career. I won’t be doing too much debating this year, or at least I don’t expect to, but I have been asked by …

Fireworks Release “Run, Brother, Run” Music Video

The Michigan band behind one of the year’s best albums has just delivered a simple and sweet music video that will have you thinking about calling home.

Fireworks have always been a band that wore their hearts, as well as any/all emotions they may feel, on their sleeves. This has allowed them to create complex pop rock releases that offer infectious melodies and stories that are deeply rooted in real life experiences. People connect with their unwavering sense of honesty, and “Run, Brother, Run” is the perfect example of a song that could easily win them a few hundred new …

Flashback: Stream Fireworks’ Original Demo EP, ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’

We have been spending a lot of time at UTG talking about the origin of bands that dominate headlines today. We have been around for over half a decade at this point, but that’s not quite as long enough to have covered every step of an artist’s career. Many bands had several years of recording and touring experience before UTG came into existence. As a result, we missed the opportunity to showcase these acts when they were young and unknown. We can never get that experience in full, but we recently realized we could stroll through memory lane ever-so-slightly by …

Fireworks Frontman Reveals Solo Project, Tea & Water

Dave Mackinder, lead singer of Michigan pop-punk outfit Fireworks has just released information on the solo project he’s been working on, called Tea & Water, and it’s pretty different.

Mackinder’s new digital EP is entitled Strangers Again and it contains three fresh tracks that all sound significantly less pop-punk and more indie/pop rock with a lot of electronic experimentation. Mackinder explains that he was able to take a more experimental route with T&W, resulting in the distinctiveness of the sound in comparison to Fireworks’ music. It’s available for digital purchase now via Bandcamp. Additionally, 100 hand-made digital download postcards …

The Weekend Classic Are About To Become Your New Favorite Band

I’ve always found that the best listening experience anyone can hope to stumble across is an instance where material that you never expected to impress you ends up knocking you on your ass. The track plays, your jaw slowly comes unhinged, and by the time it ends you’re too busy eating your own words to try and defend lack of enthusiasm up front. It’s rare, which is all the more reason to tell everyone you know whenever artists are able to have that kind of affect on your life.

Hailing from Indiana with a sound that blends together the best …

Life Is Short In Fireworks’ New Video For “Bed Sores”

Fireworks are no strangers to portraying a great story, visually, in roughly three minutes, which they’ve done yet again with their newest visual offering for Oh, Common Life cut, “Bedsores.”

A.V. Club recently premiered the Max Moore Films production which follows the life of our protagonist from childhood as he grows up through his typical reckless teenage years to become an older gentleman in the blink of an eye — something he surely realizes and is winded by as the last frame comes to a close. On one hand, it’s a beautiful journey. But on the other, there’s a terrifying …
