Modest Mouse Offer Scenic Video For Low-Key Single, “Coyotes”

On the eve of No Cities To Love‘s much-lauded release, Modest Mouse has taken another step toward ending an album dry spell less than two years shorter than Sleater-Kinney’s own. The second single off new full-length Strangers To Ourselves - as melancholy a song as you’d expect on an album with that title – has debuted.

Premiering on Interstate-8 earlier today, “Coyotes” is just a bit reminiscent of Isaac Brock’s Ugly Casanova work, only less weird and with more harmonies. Or perhaps that it sounds less like a We Were Dead b-side than “Lampshades on Fire” – …

REVIEW: Bobby Shmurda – ‘Shmurda She Wrote’ EP

Artist: Bobby Shmurda
Album: Shmurda She Wrote
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

After a summer that sent him rising from a nobody to one of the most blogged about names in urban music, Bobby Shmurda has all the hype in the world and none of the work to back it up. Though he’s become a household name in many parts of the country, not to mention having been seen rubbing shoulders with the hip-hop elite on the strength of his breakout hit, the young man behind “Hot Nigga” was nowhere to be found on the biggest must watch lists of up-and-coming emcees released …

Stream Bobby Shmurda’s New EP, ‘Shmurda She Wrote’

Before the “Shmoney Dance” broke out through the United States late this year, Ackquille Jean Pollard, more commonly known as Bobby Shmurda, was relatively under the radar.

Having signed to Epic Records not too long ago, the breakout rapper from Brooklyn is scheduled to release his debut EP, Shmurda She Wrote, on November 10. The 5-track EP features his viral Billboard chart single, “Hot Nigga,” whose music video acquired over 30 million hits in just a couple of months,. In addition to this, the EP also contains four other new tracks, two of which feature rapper Ty Real.…

Bobby Shmurda Announces ‘Shmurda She Wrote’ EP

You’ve got to hand it to Bobby Shmurda for embracing the numerous puns his name is able to create. If nothing else, at least he has a sense of humor.

Now that the heat from “Hot Nigga” has begun to die down, Epic Records is looking to make back their Bobby Shmurda investment money with the release of the young emcee’s Shmurda She Wrote EP on November 10. The five-track digital release will be the rapper’s first since signing with the label earlier this year. You can view the artwork and track list at the end of this …

UTG INTERVIEW: Steve Rennie, Manager of Incubus, Founder Of Renman Music & Business

From time to time, a chance to interview someone we’ve long admired comes up that we simply cannot resist. Stevie Rennie is a music industry expert who started as a promoter in Los Angeles, became a record executive for Epic Records, and ended up managing Incubus. He’s now started his own website for those who want to learn about the music industry, Renman Music & Business (or RenmanMB), and launched an Indiegogo campaign to support it. We were able to catch up with him on a Friday before the itch to golf took over.

Death Grips Launch Their Own Label Thirdworlds

Death Grips have not had the best luck with finding a stable label home and today they create their own sanctuary, called Thirdworlds. The label’s official logo can be seen to your left in the feature image box.

Thirdworlds isn’t exactly all that independent though. A quote from the press states that the home to Death Grips was “created via a very unique relationship with Harvest/Capitol, to be distributed by Caroline.” We can all expect a new album from the group in 2014.

HOLY SH!T: Death Grips Dropped From Epic Records

Earlier today, I commented that I still thought the Death Grips versus Epic Records battle was a publicity stunt; maybe I was wrong.

Epic Records have dropped Death Grips in light of their on going battle over the release of No Love Deep Web. Epic release this statement: “Epic Records is a music first company that breaks new artists. That is our mission and our mandate. Unfortunately, when marketing and publicity stunts trump the actual music, we must remind ourselves of our core values. To that end, effective immediately, we are working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips.

Death Grips Battle With Epic Records Continues

We anticipated this sort of dispute here at UTG. A major label signing one of the most risky and unusual acts surprised us early this year, with Epic Records signing Death Grips as odd as an odd couple gets. Over a month ago, the hardcore rap group released a stream of their most recent album, No Love Deep Web, on their website without the label’s apparent permission, taking their website up and down a few times in the process (and for a while when it was up, leaving us with a mugshot of a penis with writing on it. …
