Pop Music Will Save Us All: Mike Naran – “As It Seems”

Spring may be less than three weeks away, but so far New England does not seem to care. The world outside UTG HQ has been below freezing for the better part of a week and the temperatures show no sign of rising anytime soon. Fortunately, great music still has the ability to take us places, and every time we hear Mike Naran’s “As It Seems” we’re allowed a few brief moments of summer (before being thrust back into a frozen city with slippery sidewalks, ill-mannered pedestrians, and an almost ever-impending chance of snowstorms that could royally screw whatever plans …

Nai Harvest - 'Hold Open My Head'

Nai Harvest Stream ‘Hold Open My Head’

Nai Harvest are streaming their newest EP, Hold Open My Head, over at Stereogum. The four track EP from the British emo duo is a culmination of years of cherished indie music, all packaged within a bright, fuzzy, and alluring four song package.

With “Rush,” and “Hold Open My Head” already released, the two newest tracks, “Pastel,” and “I Don’t Even Know,” add to the variability of the offering. With “Pastel” as a more drone adventure, “I Don’t Even Know” is an eccentric track that closes the work beautifully.

But, enough talk, head over to Stereogum and experience …

REVIEW: Speedy Ortiz – ‘Real Hair’

Artist: Speedy Ortiz
Album: Real Hair
Genre: Alt-rock/Noise Punk
Label: Carpark

After a huge year in 2013, including a critically acclaimed debut album, Major Arcana, and a match-made-in-heaven tour with The Breeders, Speedy Ortiz refuse to sleep, and have released another four songs, with their Real Hair EP. This time, they took Paul Q. Kolderie to record for them, which appears to be another perfect connection for this band, as he is no stranger to working with the sorts; with a repertoire including Radiohead and the Pixies. This coalescence will be nothing short of a landmark for the band, …

UK electronic musician and producer SBTRKT is prepping to release a new 12″ of instrumental tracks this year, and Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBC 6 Music got to premiere one of them over the weekend. The song, called “Hold The Line,” is a rather peaceful track that’s more for listening to than dancing — although, with all of SBTRKT’s work, that’s still possible.

“Hold The Line” is one of the several songs that will be on his upcoming EP, Transitions. He will also be releasing a new full-length later this year. When he sent the track over to the station, he …

Drop Everything and Discover Bentley Park

It must be tough trying to develop an alternative rock act these days. With the same dozen or so acts making up every major tour announcement, finding a way to catch a break with curious music fans is nearly impossible. The best most can hope to do is create music so good it makes people want to share it with others, which is exactly what Bentley Park have done with their latest release.

I have no idea exactly how many emails come through the UTG offices pitching bands that sound like My Chemical Romance, A Day To Remember, Pierce The …
