REVIEW: Black Beach – ‘Play Loud, Die Vol. 1′

Artist: Black Beach
Album: Play Loud, Die Vol. 1
Genre: Rock

I’m not entirely sure if I should be mad when listening to Massachusetts’ Black Beach, or somewhere between anger and serenity. See, Black Beach is a band that trucks their sound through the mud, funneled through distortion, static, anger, sludge, whatever. You name it, it’s there. But what holds all these tones together are melodies that flow beautifully with one another, creating a perfect balance of disgusting and peace. With bass lines flowing in between guitars drowned in their own reverb, drums pounding in the background, and vocals …

Ty Segall Mr Face

Ty Segall Announces New ‘Mr Face’ EP, Shares Title Track

The man who never stops making music is once again making new music. Garage rock god Ty Segall is back with a new EP titled Mr Face that serves as a follow-up to last year’s excellent Manipulator. The gatefold boule 7″ EP drops January 13 via Famous Class. Pre-orders are ongoing here.

In anticipation, Segall has shared the title track from the EP on Bandcamp. It’s an acoustic ditty that would work well for any roadtrip through the desert, kicking up dirt clouds on the skirt of Los Angeles. Don’t worry about it being too chill. Segall …

Albums and Artists That Will Transcend My Year

I’d like to close out my first year of music journalism with a short list of short lists in typical end-of-the-year fashion. It’s been a wonderful half-year here at Under The Gun Review and I’ve had the pleasure of working with and getting to know some very talented and passionate journalists in my time so far. On top of that, I’ve spoken to some of my favorite artists, and even got to voice my opinion on some really excellent pieces of music. Of course, 2014 has also been an excellent year full of fresh and inspiring music. At the end …

Kyle Lucas

Kyle Lucas Offering His ‘Fear And Loathing In Marietta’ EP For Free Download

Kyle Lucas has been a busy guy as of late. With his current collaboration with Jonny Craig and Captain Midnite, it’s hard to imagine he has time to record solo music. Lucky for fans though, he has taken the time to record a new EP, titled Fear And Loathing In Marietta.

As a show of appreciation for everyone’s support, the entire EP is available to download for free. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to listen to some of his music before, now is a great time to check him out. The EP can be downloaded right here

Head North 2014

Head North Sign To Bad Timing Records, Releasing New EP In Spring 2015

Remember back in September when we told you that Head North were the next big thing? The band’s foray into world domination begins today, as they announce their partnership with Bad Timing Records.

Hailing from Buffalo, New York, Head North are the single most creative force in contemporary pop-punk. 2014 saw the group through the release of their EP Scrapbook Minds, as well as a split with Connecticut’s A Will Away, several touring opportunities, and some fantastic one-off shows with the likes of Modern Baseball, Knuckle Puck, and Aaron West & The Roaring Twenties.

REVIEW: Front Porch Step – ‘Whole Again’

Artist: Front Porch Step
Album: Whole Again EP
Genre: Acoustic folk
Label: Pure Noise Records

I’ve grown to love the EP format over the years. When it’s properly executed, a shorter release offers a perfectly sized stopgap for fans between records, while giving the artist an opportunity to try new things in a sidestep from the high risk, career benchmark, full-length format. In this regard, Front Porch Step has nailed it with Whole Again. The short, fifteen-minute EP features three new songs, all of which offer a new take on Front Porch Step mastermind Jake Mcelfresh’s distinct songwriting style, …

St. Vincent

Stream St. Vincent’s Tropical ‘Pieta’ EP

In October, St. Vincent announced she would release a two-song 10″ EP for Record Store Day’s Black Friday event. Thanks to the internet, both tracks off the EP, “Pieta” and “Sparrow”, are online to stream in full.

The vinyl comes in a bright package designed by Willo Perrnon (the man responsible for all the visuals on her world tour) and each is individually numbered. The songs are, according to RSD’s website, a “deep musing on death and loss that recalls the sonic textures of Big Science-era Laurie Anderson,” but to us they sound rather tropical and snarky. Stream them below …

Prawn

Prawn Share New Single, “Built For”

New Jersey is bringing emo rock back, and Prawn are riding at the front of it. The group dropped their sophomore LP, Kingfisher, earlier this year, but had to cut the 12-song tracklist down due to vinyl limitations. On Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on November 28, the band will share the two songs they had to cut.

The tracks will surface on a new EP, titled Settledvia Topshelf Records, of which the title track has already surfaced. The first of the cut songs is “Built For.” It dabbles in the warmth of ’90s emo …
