REVIEW: Shiny Toy Guns – III

Artist: Shiny Toy Guns
Album: III
Genre: Synth-pop, electro-pop
Label: Five Seven Music

After some awkward backlashes to their previous record Season of Poison, Shiny Toy Gun’s III – their third album, fittingly enough – is a more positive encouraging step for the band. It’s not a perfect album, or even all that exceptional, but it has a searing and consistent atmosphere that gives it presence and intrigue. It’s not exactly what one would describe as charming – the electro-pop and synth nature of Shiny Toy Guns’ music is perhaps more properly described as alluring. But this sense …

STREAM: Ellie Goulding – “Hanging On (ft. Tinie Tempah)”

Electro-pop heart-breaker, Ellie Goulding, is at it again. The British songstress has released a new track featuring English hip-hop artist, Tinie Tempah entitled “Hanging On”. It is Goulding’s first new track to surface since the release (and re-release) of her 2010 debut, Lights. Goulding’s instantly recognizable burnt soprano grabbed many listeners’  attention right off the bat. Couple that with her pop sensibility, and the hook was set. Lights is brilliant.

Goulding is hard at work on her follow-up to Lights. Rumor has it that “Hanging On” is going to be on the forthcoming sophomore record. Yet, Goulding has …

Album Review: Lights – The Listening

The_Listening-LightsArtist: Lights
Album: The Listening
Genre: Electronica/Pop
Label: Warner Bros./Sire

Canadian songstress Lights has finally returned to the music scene with her first full length album. The Listening, which is in stores this week, boasts so much electro-pop goodness that the meer attempt to capsulize it in some amusing introductory form would be a waste of everyone’s time. Let’s just say that Lights is back and in a way no one else can ever be.

Leading off with the single, Lights instantly shows development in the sheer depth of the musical atmosphere she creates. No longer do we have …

The Friday Night Boys – Off The Deep End

fnb_off_the_deep_endArtist: The Friday Night Boys
Album: Off The Deep End
Genre: Pop Rock
Label: Fueled by Ramen

I think I have to deal with the fact that pop rock is not what it use to be and that may simply be a sign I’m getting older. Pop punk or pop rock use to have attitude, but now it seems to be more about innuendo and harmony, which is fine by today’s standards, but weird to me. That said, I do enjoy a hearty amount of it, so don’t go thinking this is bias in any way/shape/or form. I didn’t review …
