To coincide with this countdown we’ll be posting our top 25 metal (and metal-ish) albums of 2012. 25 days of hell, 25 rad metal albums to make up for it.

Danza IIII: The Alpha – The Omega feels like a rather fitting close to an era. Eight years and four ballistic albums made for a pretty interesting ride for The Tony

25 Days Of Metal 2012: #14 The Acacia Strain – Death Is The Only Mortal

Rather than counting down the days until we can celebrate Christmas, this year we’re bringing you a series of metal posts will be celebrating the countdown until we don’t have to be inundated with Christmas music and decorations everywhere. To coincide with this countdown we’ll be posting our top 25 metal (and metal-ish) albums of 2012. 25 days of hell, 25 rad metal albums to make up for it.

Deathcore is dead, mostly. I’d bet The Acacia Strain likes it this way, especially if you follow the sentiment from their latest album, Death Is The Only Mortal (if you did …

REVIEW: Defiler – Nematocera

Artist: Defiler
Album: Nematocera
Genre: Deathcore
Label: Razor & Tie Records

I love metal. All forms of it. I’ll spend hours listening to every kind of metal from Mayhem to The Acacia Strain. Unfortunately, I get burnt out on it after a while. For weeks at a time the metal on my playlist gathers dust as I explore indie-rock and enjoy college rock bands from the 90′s (because I am stupid). When Defiler hit the scene, they brought me back out of my musical coma and reclaimed my ears in the name of metal. When I heard they had a …

REVIEW: Whitechapel – Whitechapel

Artist: Whitechapel
Album: Whitechapel
Genre: Deathcore
Label: Metal Blade

After 6 years of being a band, Whitechapel marks their fourth full length effort with a new release titled (you guessed it) Whitechapel. This self-titled album features 10 new songs by the band, while also featuring a new drummer by the name of Ben Harclerode. The album makes for a great progression from what the band has released in the past through the use of some natural time changes and scene-setting lighter instrumentals. Here’s what I thought about it:

UTG Metal Review Roundup (April 2012)

UTG METAL REVIEW ROUNDUP. This column is exactly as simple as it sounds. Lots of metal albums come out and resident metalhead Jordan Munson is here to give you the skinny on a litany of these albums. No frills, no extra, no nonsense–just the information you need to know.

Demon Hunter – True Defiance

Demon Hunter show just why they’ve had such lasting success on their latest album, True Defiance. An incredibly well-balanced mix of metal styles with a familiar accessibility of many “radio metal” acts. Ryan Clark’s signature vocal sound and style paired with a litany of tasteful …

Review: Bermuda – The Wandering

Artist: Bermuda
Album: The Wandering
Genre: Deathcore/Nu-Metal
Label: Mediaskare Records

Last March Bermuda released their EP Isolationist(s). The album was met with mixed reviews, but with the unanimous opinion that it was most definitely some of the most brutal metal released within the last couple years. Now, a year later the same opinion could be agreed upon for Bermuda’s full length follow-up and debut The Wandering. Despite the album’s title, The Wandering is a rioting runaway train headed straight for your brain. However, instead of hitting the pleasure center,  The Wandering just barely misses and instead ends up bouncing …

EXCLUSIVE: A Conversation With Cory Johnson of Impending Doom

With the landscape of the deathcore scene becoming more and more diverse over the last couple years, some bands are still looking to find their way, to settle into their own unique niche. Obviously some bands are doing it better than others, and it would appear that Impending Doom are about to join the leagues of people finding their home in the extreme music realm. Fusing a somewhat standard assortment of influences into a groovy package that separates them just enough from the pack to both be extremely accessible and still interesting. Amidst making some power moves to cement their …

Michael Stafford Quits Chelsea Grin, Band Offers Explanation

Utah deathcore outfit Chelsea Grin have parted ways with guitarist Michael Stafford.

The band broke news of Stafford’s departure earlier today via their official Facebook. In a statement, the band wrote:

Michael Stafford has recently decided that the hectic touring lifestyle is not for him, and among other personal reasons, has decided to step down as the lead guitar player for Chelsea Grin. This may have been obvious to a lot of you as he hasn’t been with us since the All Stars Tour, but he has given us his final decision recently and we must move forward. Jason

REST IN PEACE: Oceano

UPDATE: Earache Records has commented that Oceano are NOT breaking up and instead going on “hiatus.” Click here for more details.

Those of you in love with guttural growls and chugs are about to have a pretty shitty day. After months of rumors, Oceano have announced they will be disbanding in the near future.

A member of Oceano took the group’s official Facebook last night, after a previous status update from the group asking former Killswitch Engage vocalist Howard Jones to send in a demo was taken by some fans as an inquiry for a new vocalist. The post reads:…

REVIEW: Attila – Outlawed

Album: Outlawed
Artist: Attila
Genre: Party Metal
Label: Artery Recordings

Over the course of just a couple years, the entire landscape of “metalcore” has completely changed–for better or worse. Bands like Killswitch Engage are nowhere to be found, bands like Attila now at the forefront. It’s been a dramatic shift, and it looks like it’s here to stay (at least for now). Attila refer to themselves on their Facebook page as “party metal” and it’s a pretty accurate description of the band in just about every way.
