UTG SESSION: Sleep On It, Part 1 – Interview & “Sunrise”

Chicago natives Sleep On It just wrapped up their first co-headlining tour alongside their buddies in Real Talk on ‘The Rebel Alliance Tour.’ The tour, which made its way from Kentucky to New York and back, marks the first time the band has officially hit the road. As a band that operates in a completely DIY realm of music, the guys were able to tour in support of their debut EP, Everything, All At Once, with some of their own savings and some help via their devoted fan-base through a Kickstarter campaign.

DVD REVIEW: We Came As Romans – ‘Present, Future, and Past’

Film: Present, Future, and Past
Starring: We Came As Romans
Genre: Music/Concert

The rise of We Came As Romans from unknown Michigan post-hardcore outfit to international headliners is the very definition of a cinderella story. The group that signed with Equal Vision back in 2009 have grown from boys to men over the last half decade, and in that time recorded three critically-acclaimed albums, each more complex than the one before. Through it all, the members have remained true to themselves and their roots, allowing their experiences and struggles guide the material that creates their future releases. It’s not an …

UTG PHOTOS: Lollapalooza 2014 in Chicago, IL

Under The Gun’s Head of Photography, Corbin Alvae, attended Lollapalooza at Grant Park in Chicago, IL.

I went out to Chicago to attend the infamous 3-day music festival known as Lollapalooza, which takes place at Grant Park in the downtown area. The whole weekend was packed with artists of various genres; everything from electronic, to indie rock, to hip-hop. Chicago is one of my favorite cities to go and photograph in, all because the area is just simply beauty and definitely a place everyone needs to visit.

Kicking off my weekend starting on Friday, I began by getting the feel …

UTG PHOTOS: Pitchfork Music Festival 2014 (7/18/14)

Under the Gun sent photographer Nina Corcoran to Union Park in Chicago, IL from July 18-20 for Pitchfork Music Festival.

Every year, Pitchfork Music Festival announces its lineup and I let out a little wimper over in Boston from jealousy. The music blog’s annual festival has been going on for ten years now in Chicago, and as such they’re able to curate a small but focused line-up that boasts a lot of great up-and-coming acts as well as bigger indie staples. This year, at long last, I finally caved in and went.

After interviewing the bands playing about their favorite

Chief Keef

Chief Keef Totes Guns And Louis Vitton Handbags In “Fool Ya” Music Video

Chief Keef has been unusually quiet throughout the majority of summer 2014, but last night he returned to the spotlight with a brand new song that is chock full of everything fans have come to expect from Chicago’s misunderstood king.

“Fool Ya” is a song that, as the title suggests, finds Chief Keef telling you all the ways he and his squad of goons can (and/or will) fool you. They might roll by in a Ferrari, then switch it up and swing by in a Benz just an hour later. Why? Because fools won’t be expecting that. Keef and his …

Rise Against Siren Song

10 YEARS LATER: Rise Against’s ‘Siren Song of the Counter Culture’

If you were to look at Pitchfork’s scathing 2.9/10 review of Rise Against’s third studio album today, you’ll find more snark-filled jabs against young adult angst and punk ideologies stuffed into a letter to Ralph Nader than you could shake an X-emblazoned fist at. Plenty has changed in the past ten years since that was published, though. For example, Mr. Nader’s been given a reasonable break and these Chicago natives have made strides towards maturity (and consequentially, commercialization).…

Chance & Arthur

Get Nostalgic With Chance The Rapper’s Cover Of The ‘Arthur’ Theme Song

Later this week, Chance the Rapper will be returning to his hometown of Chicago to perform a headlining set at Lollapalooza, and as a warm-up, has unveiled a new tune via the festival’s official website.

What is it you ask? A radio-ready autumn anthem? A blistering diss track? A mindbending remix?

Not even close. Earlier this morning, the 21-year-old wordsmith made public his love for throwback PBS programming by debuting his take on the Arthur theme song. Yes, Arthur—the anthropomorphic a-a-r-d-vark who has been teaching kids right from wrong for nearly two decades.

I know many of you are …

UTG LIST: The Must-See Acts At Lollapalooza 2014

It’s time for Lollapalooza, the one festival that Chicago residents look forward to most all Summer long. Held in beautiful downtown Chicago, IL, this year’s festival will be taking over the area from August 1-3 at the legendary Grant Park. UTG will be on the festival grounds all weekend to get some amazing coverage of headliners and undercard acts alike, along with everything else Lolla has to offer.

For some pre-fest coverage, our Head of Photography, Corbin Alvae, will be listing off the acts that he believes you cannot miss at this year’s event. Throughout the weekend as well, …

Sleep On It To Tour With Real Talk, Surpass Goal On Kickstarter Campaign

Better gas up your cars, Star Wars geeks, because Sleep On It are coming to a city near you. The guys will be hitting the road on the ‘Rebel Alliance Tour’ with their friends in Real Talk, whose latest release Maps & Miles dropped earlier this month.

The Chicago based pop-punk band recently exceeded their goal on a Kickstarter program to get the band successfully on the road. If you frequent UTG, you’ll remember when we premiered the track “Cope” a few months back off the band’s latest release, Everything, All At Once.

A Day To Remember Headline Chicago Warped Tour

The summer of added madness on the Vans Warped Tour continues today with the addition of A Day To Remember to one of the Midwest’s biggest dates.

Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman surprised attendees to the world’s largest traveling music festival this morning by announcing that A Day To Remember will be performing a special one-off headline performance during today’s tour stop in Chicago. The time of the band’s set has yet to be revealed, but if it’s anything like Linkin Park’s appearance earlier this summer, concertgoers can expect a set sometime between four and six o’clock.

Watch Walking Bicycles’ Dark Stop-Motion Music Video for “Eyesore”

Walking Bicycles‘ name may sound like a quaint twee-pop group, but get ten seconds into one of their songs and you’ll realize they’re anything but. The Chicago-based group stomp around with the type of gloom rock that hinges on noise, speed, and a little bit of pop, all while nodding to Siouxsie and the Banshees. Their newest single “Eyesore” off To Him That Wills The Way (out August 12 via Highwheel Records) is proof of that, and now we get a dark stop-motion music video to accompany it.

Directed and produced by Elliott Kaffee, and inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s …

UTG INTERVIEW: Pitchfork Music Festival Bands on Their Favorite Chicago Hangouts

We’re a little more than excited for Pitchfork Music Festival to arrive this year considering it has an awesome record fair (Chirp!), top notch food vendors (Rice Table! Puffs of Doom!), and a beautifully stacked lineup (Slowdive! Beck! Neutral Milk Hotel!). The festival will take place over at Union Park on July 18-20 for three days of great music before dispersing to Chicago’s playground of venues for a series of after-shows. And so the countdown to musical bliss begins.

To help festivalgoers make the most out of their experience, we asked some of the bands about their favorite spots, where …
