Deftones are no strangers to tragedy. Earlier this month the band said goodbye to founding bassist, Chi Cheng, at age 42 after a car accident in November 2008 left him paralyzed and partially conscious. With his loss still fresh in the mind of the band and music fans around the world, news that Kris Kross member, Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly, passed last night has touched on a wound that had only just begun to heal.

Deftones Release Statement on Chi’s Passing

It’s been nearly four years since Chi Cheng of Deftones suffered injuries from a car accident that had eventually resulted in his untimely passing on Saturday.

Words can’t describe the impact that Cheng had on the lives of hundreds, probably thousands of people. The band’s guitarist, Stephen Carpenter, made a statement courtesy of the California metal group for his former band mate and friend. Chi Cheng, Deftones Bassist Passes Away

We have some sad news to report tonight: it seems that Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has passed away.

After a car accident in Santa Clara, CA back in 2008, Chi suffered major injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. This accident left Cheng in a coma.

In 2010, the musician showed improvement, responding to commands and moving his legs. After showing more signs of rehabilitation, he was moved to his home for recovery.

Deftones Will Release Scrapped Album

In 2008, original Deftones’ bassist Chi Cheng was in a car crash that put him in a coma. Only as recently as this past July did he finally make it out of the hospital to recover at home. Back in 2008, the Deftones were working on an album with Cheng, Eros, that was scrapped when the band hired new bassist Sergio Vega.

There has been a lot of doubt and worry surrounding the pneumonia diagnosis of Deftones’ Chi Cheng but he is recently showing signs of improvement / consciousness in the ICU.

DAMMIT: Deftones’ Chi Cheng Diagnosed With Pneumonia, In ICU

This is a pretty shitty way to start the day.

News starting rolling in last night that Deftones’ bassist Chi Cheng, who has most recently been in a partially conscious state following a 2008 car accident, has been diagnosed with pneumonia. He is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital and word on the street is that things are not looking good.

The Dillinger Escape Plan Auction Off Drumhead For Chi Cheng

In 2008, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was sadly in a car accident that has left him bed-ridden in a coma till this day. Over time, his medical bills have continued to rise obviously so The Dillinger Escape plan have decided to try and help.

The band is auctioning off a signed drumhead that they destroyed onstage in Pomona, California while touring with the Deftones this year. All proceeds will go toward Cheng’s medical bills and recovery process which is hopefully very quick.
