LIVE VIDEO: Led Zeppelin – “Black Dog” (Taken from ‘Celebration Day’)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock that last few months, it’s likely you’re at least somewhat aware that Led Zeppelin recently put a concert film into limited release and (according to their publicist) found gigantic success. The film is called Celebration Day and features amazing footage from the group’s 2010 reunion show. Tickets sold so well that the group ended up announcing additional screenings, and next week they’ll release the CD/DVD. To mark the occasion, the group have released footage of their “Black Dog” performance, which sounds admittedly different, yet familiar. We think they’ve still got it, and something …

REVIEW: Lions Lions – To Carve Our Names

Artist: Lions Lions
Album: To Carve Our Names
Genre: Rock/Hardcore
Label: Hollywood Waste Records

Methinks To Carve Our Names could be a grower. It’s a fine album, all fresh-faced ardour and youthful bombast, but it doesn’t leave the most lingering of impressions on its first listen. The problem with hardcore of this kind is that it’s so easily put together. Without meaning to impugn the technical skills of any of the bands in the genre, it’s a scene that has a very specific and certain sound and covers such a wide array of bands that it is very tough to …

Hawthorne Heights Comment On Acoustic Tour

Hawthorne Heights have released a statement regarding their forthcoming acoustic tour.

In an open letter to fans released earlier this week, Hawthorne Heights wrote:

Last February we embarked on our first ever full band, all acoustic tour…just for fun. The idea was to hear our songs in a different way for our own sanity, and to give our die hard fans a different type of show. We only booked it for two weeks, because we had no idea how it would go for us, or our fans. What happened in those two weeks turned out to be more than

REVIEW: The Maine – Pioneer

Artist: The Maine
Album: Pioneer
Genre: Rock
Label: Action Theory/Warner Bros

The Maine have come far for a relatively young band, and on this evidence, it’s not difficult to see why. Pioneer combines a light-hearted, easygoing vocal with big, resounding choruses to create a widely accessible and highly enjoyable album. It doesn’t have any hidden depths or darkness, and succeeds in its capable and fresh take on traditional, straightforward rock.

REVIEW: Hot Chelle Rae – Whatever

Artist: Hot Chelle Rae
Album: Whatever
Genre: Pop-rock
Label: RCA

Whatever is a most fitting title for this album, commencing as it does with a flippant, uniform dismissal of an offending girlfriend. It evolves into something more bizarre, its initial devil-may-care tunes giving way to soapy emotional ballads that sing only too highly of another girl (at least I’m hoping and assuming it’s not the same one). It is, nonetheless, a really enjoyable album with an appealing and upbeat disposition. The tracks are poppy and summery – a good antidote for the rapidly escalating winter weather – and while they’re …

REVIEW: Counterparts – The Current Will Carry Us

Artist: Counterparts
Album: The Current Will Carry Us
Genre: Melodic Hardcore
Label: Victory Records

About six months ago, I moved back to DC from Boston, I love both those cities with all my heart, I grew up in DC, and I don’t think I’ll ever get sick of living here, but I still miss Boston everyday; I miss the delightfully trashy house parties in Allston, I miss getting coffee from Dunks everyday, I don’t miss the weather at all, or trying to find parking, but above all that, I miss the music scene. We have a few notable bands in …

STREAM/DOWNLOAD: Amy Winehouse ft. Nas – Like Smoke

Amy Winehouse may be dead, but her career lives on the December the release of her first (and hopefully only) posthumous album, Lioness: Hidden Treasures. Today we have the debut of the first single and so far, we’re sold.

“Like Smoke” brings together the late modern jazz heroine and rapper Nas for a track that demands your attention. The music is subtle, typical for Winehouse’s catalog, but it’s the blend of her voice and Nas’ flow that will have you hitting repeat again and again. You can stream, download, and enjoy the song for yourself after the jump.

REVIEW: Close Your Eyes – Empty Hands And Heavy Hearts

Artist: Close Your Eyes
Album: Empty Hands and Heavy Hearts
Genre: Hardcore/progressive/pop punk
Label: Victory Records

Not to put too fine a point on it, but this album is the bomb. Sprawling music and cutting vocal sprees combine to create a powerful and edgy record full of emotional breakdowns and gorgeous melodies. In keeping with their background, there’s also a potent message embedded in the lyrics, but even if you aren’t of a similar persuasion there’s much to love here.

REVIEW: Jack’s Mannequin – People And Things

Artist: Jack’s Mannequin
Album: People and Things
Genre: Piano rock
Label: Sire Records

There’s something about the piano as a lead instrument that just cannot be matched. When used properly, it’s classical, eloquent, rich and beautiful, providing a glossy emotional sheath that won’t be equalled by any other musical component. Andrew McMahon is already a seasoned veteran and in his hands the instrument comes alive in the most wonderful way, helping to craft another album filled with gorgeous melodies.
