REVIEW: Have Mercy – The Earth Pushed Back

Band: Have Mercy
Album: The Earth Pushed Back
Genre: Alternative
Label: Topshelf Records

There haven’t been a ton of records I’ve been really excited about this year thus far. I’ve given some high marks in terms of “scoring,” and I think that is partially because there has been a lot of pretty mediocre records coming out of the scene these days, and I’ve lost sight of what truly great really means. Though it may seem strange to admit, some albums I’ve given high marks to earlier in the year may have deserved lower scores in hindsight. Why, you ask? Well, …

Paramore 2013

MUSIC VIDEO: Paramore – “Now”

The wait is over.

After weeks of teasing, Paramore have released the official video for their new single, “Now.” The clip features epic battle sequences that offer enough eye-popping visual goodies to keep even those unamused by the group’s new alternative sound entertained for a solid four-and-a-half minutes. You can view the video after the jump.

Fans seem pretty split over Paramore’s new sound. Personally, it does nothing for me. Comment below and let us know how you feel about the song and video.

Paramore will release a new album later this year. Stay tuned for details.

REVIEW: Virgins Family Band – ‘Honeylion’

Artist: Virgins Family Band
Album: Honeylion
Genre: Rock, Indie, Experimental
For fans of: Dirty Projectors, As Tall As Lions, Melpo Mene

Experimental rock quintet Virgins Family Band was previously known in high school by the straight-forward cognomen VIRGINS. It’s hard to say where they lost the name but we’ll assume that it was consensual.

After a pair of VIRGINS bedroom EPs, some overflowed hometown shows, three bicycle tours, and adopting some pretty impressive individual nicknames — e.g. Turkish Gold, Blues Explosion, and my personal favorite, Tough Shit — Virgins Family Band is pleased to release their newest effort, Honeylion, …

Mumford & Sons On Pace to Have Biggest Sales Week of Year

Indie group Mumford & Sons is set to have the biggest sales week of the year in the US according to Billboard. Their latest work, Babel, is set to move 600,000 copies, which would be the highest sales in a week since classic rockers AC/DC’s album Black Ice came out in 2008.

To put that in perspective, that’s 253,000 more copies than Justin Bieber’s album Believer managed for first week sales.

Frontman Marcus Mumford has also said that the album is not about his Christian faith. Be sure to check out UTG’s review of Babel here. Do …

REVIEW: Mumford and Sons – Babel

Artist: Mumford and Sons
Album: Babel
Genre: Folk
Label: Island / Glassnote

If you look at my history of reviews, I listen to a lot of punk and hardcore music. They are my favorite genres, and they always will be. However one of the things that comes with liking that type of music is that people generally think that you only listen to that style of music. While the majority of the time this is very true, there are a lot of other genres that I may not be as knowledgeable about, but affect me in very powerful ways. Mumford …

REVIEW: Two Door Cinema Club – Beacon

Artist: Two Door Cinema Club
Album: Beacon
Genre: Indie, alternative
Label: Kitsuné/Glassnote Records

Two Door Cinema Club have exploded in my neck of the woods (they are my countrymen) over the past couple of years, although they’ve never figured very prominently on my mp3. Moreover, the incessant use of their music on hipster telephone ads cemented their position as little more than an affable indie band in my head. Yet, there’s an incredible amount to love about this band – and don’t mistake my habitual indifference for distaste. TDCC offer a fresher take on a very particular sound, one that …

REVIEW: Duck. Little Brother, Duck! – Don’t Take Our Filth Away

Artist: Duck. Little Brother, Duck!
Album: Don’t Take Our Filth Away
Genre: Alternative
Label: Topshelf Records

I know I’m not supposed to like this, because this is all faintly ridiculous. And yet…I kinda do. There’s no consistency beyond the rough and tumble set-up; the songs are all varying lengths and it’s nigh impossible to figure out what they’re actually singing about, but the rough-hewn mentality of this record is something that’s impossibly infectious. It’s a difficult listen alright, and likely to alienate far more than it endears, but I can’t help discerning some artistic intrigue amidst all the grainy noise.…

Review: Night Verses – Out of the Sky EP

Band: Night Verses
Album: Out of the Sky EP
Genre: Post-hardcore/Experimental
Label: Unsigned

Douglas Robinson, the vocalist for The Sleeping, has been keeping busy since the band announced their indefinite-hiatus this January. Robinson stepped in as the vocalist for the Archives after the departure of Marco Lira. However, instead of going on as Archives, the group adopted a new moniker: Night Verses.

The group is characterized by their artful melding of the bombastic crunch and static of the Archive and the melodic gloss of The Sleeping.

Chevelle-1

REVIEW: Chevelle – Hats Off To The Bull

Artist: Chevelle
Album: Hats Off To The Bull
Label: Epic
Genre: Post-grunge / alternative metal

Remember the early 2000s when the hard rock/post-grunge/alternative metal scene was exploding? Bands such as 10 Years, Chevelle, Taproot, Trapt, Cold, Earshot, etc. were a dime a dozen–and most of them weren’t that great. A few of these bands are still kicking around, Chevelle being one that never really stopped doing their thing. Don’t believe me? Their last album, Sci-Fi Crimes hit number one the hard rock and alternative charts, as well as number six on the Billboard 200. Not too shabby for a band …

REVIEW: Joe Summers – Make A Move EP

Artist: Joe Summers
Album: Make A Move-EP
Genre: Rock

Wanting to know what I was getting in to, I checked out Joe Summers’ MySpace profile before listening to his EP, Make A Move. I have to get this out there: the cover art scared me. It would have been alright if the creepy black-and-white photo of Summers wasn’t plastered in the middle of it. But it was. However, reading his list of influences, I could tell this guy was serious about music, and not someone pretending to be a rock artist.

REVIEW: Life Without A Jacket – Use Your Words

Artist: Life Without A Jacket
Album: Use Your Words
Genre: Indie/Alternative
Label: [unsigned]

A fixed opinion is eluding me where this record is concerned. When I first listened, I was mostly perplexed, unable to figure out whether the vocals are meant to sound this insipid. I eventually decided they were just bad, and took a dislike to the entire EP. However, upon revisiting it, I’m undecided once more. There’s certainly a pleasing contrast between how alive and vigorous the music sounds – particularly the gruelling bass lines – and the bitter, almost malignant
