Under The Gun sent Head of Photography, Kellie Gannon, to Jacobs Pavilion in Cleveland for the OAR show July 7, 2013.
This was an interesting show to shoot as it was full of nostalgia and newness at the same time. I’ve had the opportunity to shoot both Allen Stone and Andrew McMahon (with Jack’s Mannequin) previously, but OAR was a fun first. Another very cool experience was shooting at Jacobs Pavilion for the first time. Jacobs is situated on the West Bank of the Flats in Cleveland with the stage situated right in front of the Cuyahoga River, providing an absolutely gorgeous view as the sun sets on the cityscape behind the stage.
First up on the tour was the always stellar Allen Stone. With such an intense yet soothing soulful sound and arguably one of the best voices I have ever heard, Stone and his band provided the crowd with their signature groove. Opening with “What I’ve Seen,” they soon launched into a Bob Marley tune to pay homage to the late legend, ending their set with their crowd favorite, “Satisfaction.”
Andrew McMahon took the stage next, providing nostalgia for all in attendance old enough to remember the amazing Something Corporate days. The set began with some astounding Jack’s Mannequin favorites, interspersed with SoCo classics, such as “Woke Up In A Car” and “Astronaut.” They also played a few new songs, including the beautiful and upbeat “Learn To Dance.”
Headliner OAR took the stage to surprise the crowd with an impressive two hour set. Back to back hit songs, old classics, a few new tunes, and jam sessions ensued, and the band owned every second of their lengthy set. They had the crowd moving and jamming along, despite a freak monsoon-like rain at one point which began flooding into the upper stands of the venue. But the crowd embraced it, some danced in the rain, and everyone was delighted at a surprise encore including all bands taking the stage for one big jam session. Overall the show was full of energy, surprises, and bands that enjoy making soulful music and providing fans with an evening to remember. See all the photos from this stunning tour below!
