We just recently came across ASTR, one of those diamond-in-the-rough Soundcloud finds. Amongst their minimal catalog, “Operate” immediately stood out and has continued to on repeat for the majority of this past week. “Operate” is a killer, catchy track with a thick beat, infectious hooks, snare claps, rolling high-hat, and ambient synth work. It’s smooth and we can’t get enough.
While there seems to be little to no information on ASTR, it appears that they are a NYC duo consisting of one male and one female artist. Their production is reminiscent of acts like Purity Ring, Ghost Loft, and Lemontrip and if we didn’t know any better, we’d believe the vocals were lent by Rihanna. I’ve been saying that all week.
However, the video for “Operate,” released today, proves otherwise. The visuals mix shots of the ASTR pair with what looks to be science-related (and other random) archival footage from the 60s and 70s. While it ostensibly seems to have no relation to the song, the video flows well with its audio accompaniment. You can view the video for “Operate” after the jump but be sure to check out ASTR’s Soundcloud page and keep an eye out for these two because we see zero reasons why they won’t be making huge waves this year.
