I’ve been watching The Voice regularly this season. You know, every Monday and Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC. I’ve watched for several reasons, a few of which were knocked out of the competition this evening.
More on that later.
One of this year’s most impressive candidates has been Joe Kirkland, a Fort Worth Texas resident and frontman of the band Artist Vs. Poet. I wasn’t surprised to hear that Joe would be auditioning for the show. We’ve all seen established artists find success on the program (Juliet Simms (the Automatic Loveletter), Dia Frampton (of Meg & Dia). It’s a good idea, it’s good exposure.
Joe kicked off his blind audition with a ripping cover of All American Reject’s “Gives You Hell.” He followed up with an inspiring rendition of “You Get What You Give.” Tonight, those of us with power in our homes we able to watch Kirkland cover Taylor Swift’s “Mean.”
Fans of the singer’s band might recognize his interpretation of the song. The band covered it just last year. That familiarity was no doubt the deciding factor for Joe to tackle the tune on television. I thought he did great. His competition wasn’t easy. Bryan Keith is one hell of a vocalist. Team coach Adam Levine had a tough choice to make.
Spoiler: He chose Bryan.
Here is a video of tonight’s performances. Below is a video of Artist Vs. Poet’s full band rendition and a note from the band.
Thanks so much for all of the support you gave us and Joe Kirkland on The Voice. This show was never a “last shot” for us or even something we were banking on. Joe auditioned on a whim and we just kept enjoying all the exposure he managed t
Once again thank you all so much and we wish the best to everyone still competing on The Voice.
Love you all,
